NEW DELHI: Telecom minister Manoj Sinha Tuesday said that while technology promises new capabilities, and unlike other countries, India does not have a concept of driverless cars, and the government don’t want to take away such jobs.

Sinha was speaking at the joint initiative of the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (
NDMC) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) to launch high-speed and affordable public Wi-Fi and fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) services.

“Artificial Intelligence is trying to bring paradigm change worldwide, and in India. There is no concept of driverless cars in the country where there is a huge population. We don’t want to make people jobless,” Sinha said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government is aggressively driving digital initiatives and aims to bring fifth-generation or 5G technology in tandem with the most developed countries globally, that also promises autonomous driving —a concept which is more prevalent in sparsely-populated countries.

Job creation has become one of the critical issues, and is likely to dominate the upcoming general election in 2019, with the Congress-led Opposition blaming incumbent government of not providing new job opportunities to the youth.

“Being offline or online has become a new status symbol. With NDMC-MTNL initiative, a convergence between
Smart City and Digital India can be seen,” the minister said.

In a lesser time MTNL, he said, was able to deploy a robust network and with optical fibre, the telecom company has tried to build a reliable wireline network.

In 4.5 years, Sinha said that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government has doubled the telecom footprint.

“Base transreceiver stations stood at 18 lakhs today, from 8 lakhs, while the optical fibre cable-based network has grown from 7 lakh kilometres to 14 lakh kilometres currently,” he said.

Sinha also said that India has data consumption more than the US and China combined, and during the course NDA government that was came to power in May 2014, the prices have come down to close to Rs 20 per Gigabytes or GB.

Union Home Minister
Rajnath Singh, while inaugurating the NDMC-MTNL initiatives, said that a smart city must be clean, green and digitalised.

“Best practices of New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) will be adopted by other cities,” he said, adding that going forward, not just fewer cites, but entire nation would become smart in next few years.

NDMC together with state-run MTNL has launched fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) and public Wi-Fi for New Delhi region with 1 Gigabit per second upload and download speed.

Wi-Fi tariff starts at Rs 10 per GB with a single-day validity with the public Wi-Fi already available in the select Cannaught Place locations under this partnership.

In the NDMC-Indus Towers’ Smart Pole project under the Smart City Mission, the Gurgaon-based mobile infrastructure firm has deployed 55 smart poles at New Delhi’s Cannaught Place.

In 2015, NDMC had first announced that the areas under its jurisdiction would have a Wi-Fi zone, and with a partnership with mobile infrastructure firm
Indus Towers, it planned to replace 18,500 street-light poles with ‘next-gen digital poles’ with Wi-Fi access points, LED bulbs and CCTV cameras.
