\"DoT<\/figure>Kolkata: The Department of Telecommunications<\/a> (DoT<\/a>) is set to earmark additional 5G<\/a> spectrum<\/a> bands in the run up to the next auction, in line with the telcos' call to offer more airwaves for the next-gen technology which will reduce cost of rollouts, and thus lower consumer pricing.

The department is likely to unveil a revised spectrum policy<\/a> document in early-April that will include spectrum across the sub-1 Ghz, 1-6 Ghz and millimeter wave bands (above 6 Ghz) that will make up India\u2019s updated National Frequency Allocation Plan (NFAP), senior industry executives and officials said.

The updated NFAP will outline available spectrum bands and the services for which they can be used for mobile broadband communications, defence, satellite operations under the Department of Space (DoS) and also to meet the needs of the aviation, I&B, railways and home ministries.

<\/div><\/div>Telcos have been pushing DoT to update the NFAP as it does not include the 5G bands, especially the crucial millimeter waves (read: 26 Ghz, 28 Ghz), without which 5G deployment costs in India would jump several-fold and make the ultra-fast wireless broadband service unaffordable.

\u201cAn updated NFAP inclusive of the bands earmarked globally for commercial 5G services is due out shortly, which will serve as a reference document for Trai<\/a> (Telecom<\/a> Regulatory Authority of India) to start fresh consultations on all available 5G spectrum bands and their pricing before the next auction,\u201d a senior industry executive told ET.

India\u2019s telecom regulator has currently only earmarked mid-band spectrum in the 3.3-3.6 Ghz bands for 5G services. Both millimeter wave and mid-band 5G airwaves are with the DoS and defence ministry<\/a>.

Another executive cautioned that while inclusion of mmWaves in the updated NFAP is important, any reservation of these airwaves, particularly 26 Ghz, for government agencies would hurt 5G deployments in India.

The DoS had earlier objected to allocation of airwaves in the 26 Ghz band for 5G services, saying it can cause interference between satellite and 5G mobile networks. The telcos, though, have dismissed this, saying both services can co-exist without impacting coverage.

<\/div><\/div>DoT is yet to schedule India\u2019s maiden 5G spectrum sale. But the big telcos recently urged telecom secretary Anshu Prakash to push Trai to include millimeter wave (mmWave) bands for auction along with other 5G mid-bands like 3.3-3.6 Ghz. This, since the mmWave bands offer lightning fast data rates above 2 Gbps and huge capacity, which are critical for running 5G use cases cost-effectively, and since the bulk of the global 5G devices ecosystem is evolving around these efficient airwaves.

Reliance Jio<\/a>, Bharti Airtel<\/a> and Vodafone Idea say they already have 5G-ready networks. But they would need a blend of 5G spectrum, both mid-band and mmWaves, for broader 5G rollouts.
