The report said the fresh round of layoffs may reduce Twitter’s employee headcount to below 2,000 – its lowest in over a decade.
In December, the microblogging platform sacked more employees from its public policy team. This was days after it fired engineers in its infrastructure vertical.
Elon Musk, after taking over the social media platform in a $44-billion deal, sacked nearly half of the workforce in October. Twitter reportedly had 7,500 employees globally as of late September.
Musk is looking to downsize the workforce of Tesla as well. The company had fired nearly 500 employees in June.
Since he officially took control of Twitter in late October 2022, Musk had brought in sweeping changes at the micro-blogging site to cut costs.
He slashed expenses at Twitter, ordering layoffs, cutting other costs and stopping vendor payments. At the same time, he is finding new ways to make money as Twitter experiences a sharp downturn in ad revenue. Musk said in November that the loss of advertising was causing Twitter to see "a massive drop in revenue".
Twitter’s fourth quarter revenue fell about 35% year-over-year to $1.025 billion, the Information reported on Wednesday.
Eyeing more revenue
Soo after taking over, Musk launched a premium service called Twitter-verified Blue check-mark, which allows users to purchase the verified badge for their profiles by getting a paid subscription.
Twitter said on Wednesday it was offering an annual plan for Twitter Blue at a discount to its monthly price. Users can subscribe to the service for an annual price of $84, instead of a monthly subscription price of $8 on the web and $11 on Apple devices.
Meanwhile, Twitter has reportedly started to auction quirky office items after laying off thousands of employees. Some of the fancy items on the list are quirky bird memorabilia (Twitter's bird logo), Apple Macs, espresso machines, and refrigerators.
The company has also considered selling user names to generate new revenue as Musk tries to resuscitate the company's business.
