Sanjay Uppal, senior vice-president and general manager, service provider and edge business, VMware.

NEW DELHI: US-based virtualisation major VMware has said that if India can solve problems for enterprises with 5G technology, then solutions coming from the country can be taken to the global market.

“I can see a future in the next 3 to 5 years where the problem being solved for Indian enterprises by Indian telecom operators, is not just limited to India. This infrastructure can be taken worldwide because there is a need for scalable digital infrastructure at a low cost. India is the proving ground for this. If it can do this well, then I think the sky's the limit,”
Sanjay Uppal, senior vice-president and general manager, service provider and edge business, VMware told ET.

He pointed that India is at an inflexion point with rapid 5G network build-up and network infrastructure modernisation with good quality low-cost services.

"With manufacturing moving into India, the country can leapfrog on the consumer side. 5G has come in the extremely rapid wave and the modernisation of the infrastructure is heralded with a new wave of really low-cost but good quality services. I think India is at that critical inflexion point," he added.

VMware is currently working with Indian telecom operators to roll out new 5G services targeting verticals, helping monetise the high-speed broadband service. It is also helping them modernise their network by enabling them to disaggregate both the core and the RAN.

“Indian telcos are sophisticated in their understanding that it is not just going to be consumers paying for 5G..they know that just simply rolling out 5G and expecting that consumer services will pay for it, is not sufficient. Only businesses or enterprises will help them justify the spend that they have had in terms of modernising their infrastructure,” Uppal said, adding that there's a variety of new services that are being contemplated.

The virtualisation major also uses its presence in the enterprise space to help telecom operators develop
5G use cases in India and globally.

“We have a playbook of going to enterprises understanding their problem, solving it, putting it into a use case and then partnering with the telecom operators to expand that. We have done it successfully with SD-WAN, and we will do the same thing with all the edge use cases,” he added.

The executive said that India telcos’ move to virtualise their network with disaggregation is the first step towards OpenRAN.

“...when the business imperative comes in to have open interfaces, they will also do those. They are following OpenRAN extremely closely. OpenRAN will bring programmability to the network, which will be the game changer and result in new services. Indian telecom operators know this very well and we would work together with them to get that done,” he added.
