"The biggest challenge before the industry in the next five years would be to meet the growing demand of data communications and support billions of machines or things to communicate, it would not only require huge investments in the digital communication infrastructure," Ram Sewak Sharma, chairman, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) said at the ET Global Townhall.
Sharma further said that efforts to meet growing mobile data surge would also require close cooperation at the horizontal level with other sectors of the economy, and multiple sector regulators need to collaborate to support the digital transformation of various industries.
The telecom infrastructure, according to him, would be a critical component of connectivity since digital would be a mainstay.
The data traffic is likely to triple, reaching 21 EB (exabytes) per month in 2025, according to a new finding.
Following the disruptive entry of billionaire Mukesh Ambani-owned Jio in 2016, the heightened telecom sector rivalry triggered India's mobile data pricing to hit a bottom worldwide.
On average, Indians used 12 GB data per month, the highest consumption globally. The trend is expected to rise even further to about 25 GB (gigabytes) per month by 2025, a recent study by Swedish Ericsson said.
The regulator believes that the telecom industry is no more vertical but it's actually a horizontal platform on which all sectors of the economy would ride.
"The most critical area, which we have to look into, is digital connectivity. I think we should employ all kinds of technologies, business models, and investments, whatever is required to be done in order to ensure that we put single-handedly, single-mindedly our focus on improving digital connectivity, and that is what is going to yield us rich dividends in future, he said.
The sectoral watchdog also belive that telecom networks should have open networks, and it has previously mooted the concept of open architecture-based public Wi-Fi grid to bring down the cost of the internet.
"My belief is that given the scale and the numbers which we have and given the price-sensitive market, which we have, I think open architecture-based solutions, even in telecom are going to become the most appropriate solutions for our country," Sharma said.
"An open architecture is possible. Actually the framework which we proposed to the government is one such open architecture based protocol. The vision of this initiative is to establish an open architecture based Wi-Fi access network that will allow small entrepreneurs to set up and maintain access points," he added.
For India to become the ideal destination for global manufacturing in the post-pandemic world, Sharma said that the country should adopt the right policies and allow enough incentive to the manufacturing sector.
"I believe government policies relating to electronics and local handset manufacturing have paid rich dividends, but more needs to be done, particularly in the area of domestic manufacturing of telecom equipment and ensure further value addition, Trai chief said.
The manufacturing of telecom gear, according to him, is strategically important for India, and it should be ensured that such critical equipment would be manufactured domestically.
Trai had recommended that India should aim to achieve the objective of net-zero import of telecom equipment by 2022, as a part of its views on promoting local telecom equipment manufacturing released in August 2018.
