From L-R: Ishwar Sridharan, Chief Operating Officer (COO), Exotel; Shivakumar Ganesan, Co-Founder & CEO, Exotel; Sachin Bhatia, Chief Growth Officer (CGO), Exotel.

NEW DELHI: Homegrown cloud communications (CPaaS) services company Exotel has expanded further in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and will now offer services such as SMS, virtual telephony, chat, and artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled solutions in the market, as it seeks to strengthen its presence in the MENA region.

“UAE is a market which is extremely customer experience driven. And we believe that Indonesia and UAE which are the two markets outside of India, where we are going full-stack, are going to play a pivotal role in
Exotel’s growth journey outside of India,” Sachin Bhatia, Co-founder & Chief Growth Officer (CGO) of Exotel told ETTelecom, explaining the rationale for the geographical expansion.

Exotel, according to Bhatia, expects to achieve $1 million in recurring revenue in the UAE by the end of 2023. It has partnered with top local telecom operators du and Etisalat to set up infrastructure, and will deploy a small team for business operations, which will be supported by the company’s dedicated teams from Bangalore, India.

Exotel’s revenue mix comprises 15-20% from international markets and the rest from India. The share of international revenue will, however, grow to 25-30% over the coming 12-18 months with the addition of UAE and Indonesia markets.

“Exotel has raised a cumulative of about $100 million and we still have that cash. We are funding the investment, both infrastructure as well as manpower from that,” Bhatia said. “As the business progresses, we are going to be investing in customer success and local delivery and support.”

He added that India is “one of the most regulated markets” when compared to the “progressive” UAE market. Exotel last year received the pan-India UL VNO license from the
Department of Telecommunications (DoT) which allows it to offer cloud-calling solutions to businesses.

“Here [UAE], it's more about partnering with some of these companies and then making the requisite investments in the local infrastructure. This market is extremely sensitive to data privacy, data localization, and then scale investing in local data centers. But it is not as highly regulated as India,” the top executive said.

Exotel in UAE is targeting digital native businesses across e-commerce and quick commerce, property tech (proptech), and logistics technology segments. Exotel has been previously present in the UAE via its entity
Ameyo, offering contact center capabilities to businesses such as real estate provider DAMAC and Al Ansari Exchange.

“The largest revenue for example, in UAE, would be a good mix between digital natives and real estate and retail, which is very, very large in these markets,” said Bhatia.

He stated that UAE offers good growth prospects for CPaaS companies on account of the shift of traditional businesses to the cloud. “Hence it is going to be a huge opportunity in the customer engagement space to leverage the shift from on-premise to cloud as well as from voice to some of the new digital methods. Those are the two trends that we are witnessing in UAE and that are going to fuel growth in these markets,” said Bhatia.

He concluded that the transition of basic telephony services and movement of omnichannel contact centres moving to the cloud, as well as, conversational artificial intelligence (AI) are going to be the top three CPaaS use cases in the UAE.
