ET Now: Any updates on the fundraising news?

Sameer Nair: We are raising Rs 150 crore. This is being via the preferential route for about 14% stake in Balaji at a premium of about 28% on the current price of the 52-week average.

This is primarily for our OTT business. It will be launched in the end of the first quarter next year, i.e. by June.

ET Now: What will the service be like?

Sameer Nair: It is an OTT SVOD (Over the top subscriber video on demand) platform. We aspire to be like the Netflix of India. We are creating original content for it. So, it is not an aggregated content play. It is an original premium content play. We are creating a whole bunch of new shows.

ET Now: So it will be only Balaji content?

Sameer Nair: It will be content created by Balaji for this platform. It will be driven by Balaji, and often produced by other producers as well for us.

ET Now: But for a company which is cash-rich, why do you need to raise capital? You have cash on your balance sheet, why not use that?

Sameer Nair: Actually, we have different uses for our cash. It is primarily a question of resource allocation. There is a certain amount of capital being allocated towards the movie business, some towards the TV business, and some to the digital business. So, it is really only that.

ET Now: But why not use the existing cash first, and then raise more after that?

Sameer Nair: Actually, it is also a question of timing. We are getting ready to launch our OTT platform. Currently the money is tied up with our movie business. It will get unlocked only next year.

That is why we are raising cash now. That is also why we are not doing Rs 200 crore, but only Rs 150 crore.

ET Now: Where does it put the valuation for the digital business?

Sameer Nair: It does not set the valuation for the digital business. We have not done that at this stage. We are just building the business first. We will think about valuation at the next level.

ET Now: The content that you are developing for the OTT — will it be largely urban and exclusive?

Sameer Nair: Yes, largely urban content it will be. It will be exclusively available on the platform IP owned by us, and not anywhere else.

ET Now: Any revenue projections that you have for that business?

Sameer Nair: In that business, we are hoping to get to about four million paying subscribers by 2020.

ET Now: That is a long shot; what about the near term?

Sameer Nair: It is a long shot. It is a really good business. For the near term, we will first launch, and then build from there on.

ET Now: It is not a library like Netflix?

Sameer Nair: No, not a library. For Netflix and the whole US model, the library has considerably value. But what happens in India is that the movie libraries are pretty much non-exclusive. Our movies are on Netflix as well as on other platforms too.

In India, the season concept has not really caught on. Here it is more about creating new, original content. When you go to a DVD store, do you ask him how many DVDs he has? No. You just ask what's new. That is what our premise is.

ET Now: Since you want to be the Netflix of India, can I assume you won't tie up with Netflix?

Sameer Nair: It is not like that. It is more about looking at Netflix as a gold standard of technology. How they do the things they do? How they do it so smartly? There is lot to learn. Actually, when Netflix launched in India we were most excited.

ET Now: If Netflix approaches Balaji with a deal to showcase your library, will you be open to the idea?

Sameer Nair: Just to make things clear, do not have a library. The TV content that we make is owned by the broadcasters.

What do we own is the movies. And our movies are already on Netflix. What I mean is that Netflix, Reliance Jio, Airtel — all big telecom companies, all digital platforms — will be our partners.

ET Now: Won't this enable you to probably make a library of sorts?

Sameer Nair: Yes, it will. What we are looking to do now is build a genuine B to C brand. Balaji has always been a B to B business; now we aspire to be a B to C one.

ET Now: So, shall we have 'seasons; coming?

Sameer Nair: Yes, of course. In fact, we want to do things exactly in 'seasons.

ET Now: Shed some light on the quarter gone by. As I understand, contributions from movies weren't there?

Sameer Nair: We had no movie releases during that time. Our content business did very well. All our shows are doing well. It has been one of our best quarters in many years.

But more than just numbers, actually the big success for the quarter has been our show 'Nagin'. It comes on Colors; it is the No. 1 show in India as of now.

It, in a small way, also contributed to making Colors the number one channel.

"What we are looking to do now is build a genuine B to C brand.
