The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has recently announced that it is working on a new “Truecaller-like” caller ID feature. A top official has mentioned that this new mechanism will show the KYC-based names on users' phone displays, whenever they receive a call. Moreover, Trai has also received a reference to develop this new caller ID system from the Department of Telecom (DoT).
Trai chairman PD Vaghela confirmed that work on the new system will begin within a few months and also mentioned that the name as per KYC will flash whenever someone calls. He even added that Trai was planning to develop such a mechanism and now with the specific reference from DoT, the telecom regulator will start the work soon.
Trai’s caller ID: How will it work?
Trai has said that it will not enforce the caller ID feature on users without their permission. The telecom regulator has mentioned that this feature will be a consent-based, voluntary programme. Users will have the authority to decide whether or not to have their names displayed which will help keep spam calls at bay. Trai’s caller ID feature will rely on the KYC data that users share with their network providers to avail of their services. These data include ID proofs such as the Aadhaar card and the chances of inaccuracy are close to none.
How can this new feature be useful for users?
As per Trai, its caller ID feature will help users to evade spam calls and phishing attacks. In 2021, Truecaller reported that India ranks fourth amongst all the countries that receive the most spammed calls. This upcoming mechanism can lessen the spam/phishing links the country’s residents get. Receiving several unsolicited calls is annoying for most users and another report by LocalCircles revealed that about 64 per cent of Indians get three or more spam calls every day. There have been numerous cases in the country where callers claim themselves to be from banks, insurance companies and other businesses and dupe mobile users to share sensitive banking and other personal information to commit financial frauds or identity thefts.
How does Trai’s move affect apps like Truecaller?
Apps like Truecaller also help users to identify callers based on crowdsourced data. However, the upcoming Trai mechanism is expected to bring more accuracy and transparency as it will allow users to identify callers according to their KYC (Know Your Customer). Truecaller has welcomed Trai’s proposed move “in the mission to make communication safe and efficient.” The Swedish company has also mentioned that number identification is essential to end the “menace of spam and scam calls.” The company also claimed that it has been working towards this mission for the past 13 years and appreciated Trai’s move by being supportive of this and any other initiatives that the telecom regulator proposes. Trai’s u[pcoming caller ID feature is expected to cast doubt over the future of multiple caller ID apps that are currently used in India.
Cleaning up the data from crowdsourcing apps
Caller identity establishment is expected to become more clear and legally tenable once the framework for the KYC-based caller ID mechanism is developed. Moreover, this new caller ID mechanism is also expected to create a ripple effect that will gradually clean up the data available on crowdsourcing apps like Truecaller as it will include KYC linkages. Several big and small details are expected to come up during the development period.
