NEW DELHI: In a first, feature phone sales dipped marginally in the Indian market<\/a> where more than 80% Indians still use handsets that are not smartphones, CyberMedia<\/a> Research said on Tuesday.

In the July-September quarter, Indians bought 51.8 million
feature phones<\/a>, 0.8% lower compared with the corresponding period last year. Compared with the previous quarter, sales have dropped 3.7%.

Smartphone sales continued in their upward swing - with 152.3% increase in shipments at 11.1 million
devices<\/a> in the three- month period ended September 2013. The segment grew 123% over last quarter.

\"We have been saying that the way forward is smartphones. July-September 2013 is the first quarter to actually report this trend in numbers,\" CMR Telecoms Practice lead analyst
Faisal Kawoosa<\/a> said. \"This means vendors can expect to see large opportunities in the upgrades market where many feature phone users will upgrade to a smartphone.\" He predicted huge opportunity as well as competition in the entry to mid-level smartphone segments, where the volumes would remain high.

Overall, mobile handset shipments grew 10.9% to 62.9 million units in the quarter.
Nokia<\/a> was the leader in the overall (feature phones and smartphones) category with 18.9% market share, followed by Samsung<\/a> with a 12% share and Micromax<\/a> closing in with 10.8% of the market.
