\"Former<\/figure>NEW DELHI: The Central government has received about 80 applications from former IAS officers for the position of Trai<\/a> chief as the incumbent Trai chief RS Sharma<\/a> is set to demit the office on September 30, after a two year extended period, Financial Express reported.

Out of the 80 applications, 35 are from former IAS officers or close to superannuation.

As per sources who are in know of the matter, former telecom secretary JS Deepak<\/a>, former commerce secretary Rita Teaotia<\/a>, and former steel secretary Aruna Sharma are some of the bureaucrats who are in the race for the job of Trai chief.

<\/div><\/div>The telecom department had released an advertisement for the position on 4 June 2020, asking interested candidates to apply by 10 July.

The selection committee is set to shortlist the names of candidates and subsequently, will call candidates for personal interviews. The committee also holds the discretion to suggest names for the position.

The Trai chairman<\/a> can have a maximum tenure of three years of 65 years of age, whichever comes first. It should be noted that the Trai Act does not have provision for the extension of Tenure. However, Sharma\u2019s tenure as the Trai chief was extended by two years in August, 2018, after his stint as the Trai chief ended. He is also the first chairman to have a tenure of five years.
