Foxconn has received approval from the Andhra Pradesh government for the Sri City plant and will start production soon, Xiaomi said.

“All the plants should be up and running. The ramp-up will be slow. We are hoping them to be up and running soon,” said
Manu Jain, Xiaomi India head on Monday.

Muralikrishnan B., chief operating officer, Xiaomi India said that the company is hoping to start production through partners across factories in the next few days. "The supply should be ramped up…factories have done a dry run already for hygiene. Broadly, we expect to start with regular capacity by June. We will keep ramping up the production.”

Muralikrishnan said that there’s no component supply related constraint, but the main challenge is the manpower for the production and other areas like warehouses.

“Manpower is going to be the toughest task…but it is not limited to our industry, any large operations will face challenges since a lot of people have gone back. Getting them back is a herculean task…we have the manpower, but not sufficient, and we need to sort it out in coming weeks. We are starting with whatever manpower we have,” Jain said while replying to an ET query.

Xiaomi is resuming handset sales in India through both offline and online channels and will cater to demand in green and orange zones.

On inventory, Muralikrishnan said that Xiaomi typically maintains a couple of weeks of inventory, and with production starting, there won't be any challenge immediately.

Jain said that more than 15% of Xiaomi partners were operating, and starting Monday around 60% of its stores in the orange and green zones should be operational.

Xiaomi has 10,000 offline stores in India. Muralikrishnan said that the company still has an underpenetrated reach in the offline channel, and the offline expansion will continue this year.

“The market will definitely rebound and offline will continue as per the original plan,” he said, that Xiaomi will have 5000 exclusive stores by the year-end, up from 3000 currently.

Xiaomi on Monday also launched its Mi Commerce O2O solution for offline partners. The solution will allow offline partners to reach out to customers using online tools.

It's rival Vivo is also enabling 20,000 retail partners to begin smartphone sales with its new company-backed lead generation model called Vivo Smart Retail (VSR). The move is aimed at helping its retail partners regain lost business in the market besides addressing pent-up consumer demand in the market.
