Bengaluru: The Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn), the biggest contract manufacturer in the world, will set up an electronics manufacturing and assembly unit on the outskirts of Bengaluru, where it is expected to invest up to $1 billion and make iPhones for Apple.

The plant, to come up on a 300-acre plot near the Bengaluru international airport, will generate 100,000 jobs over the next 10 years, the Karnataka government announced on Friday.

The government and Foxconn did not reveal projected investment for the facility, but people briefed on the project put it between $500 million and $1 billion. The investment will be spread from 2023 to 2027, during which time the project is expected to be completed, they said.

The two sides also did not give details on which products would be manufactured there.

Union minister of state for electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar, however, indicated earlier in the day that iPhones would be one of those products. “Apple phones to be built in a new 300-acre factory in Karnataka,” Chandrasekhar tweeted. The double-engine governments of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief minister Basavaraj Bommai are working to get investments and add jobs, he said.

Foxconn didn’t respond to ET’s emailed queries.

The latest announcement comes a day after the Telangana government said Foxconn plans to set up a manufacturing facility in the state that can potentially employ over 100,000 people over 10 years.

Plans for the two new plants, in addition to increasing capacity at its existing factory, underline Foxconn’s rapid expansion in India, with the production of millions of new iPhones at the heart of its strategy.

The Karnataka government’s Friday announcement came after a 16-member Foxconn team led by chairman Young Liu met the chief minister, his Cabinet colleagues Murugesh Nirani and CN Ashwath Narayan, as well as top officials. The team also visited the airport and the factory site in the IT investment region.

The announcement may also provide a political boost for the ruling BJP, with Karnataka assembly elections due by May.

Bommai’s government has been marketing the state as a key destination for investment in electronics system design & manufacturing (ESDM).

There are reports that besides iPhones and components for Apple’s smartphone, the Taiwanese company is also likely to manufacture other electronic items and electric vehicle parts at the proposed plant.

Narayan said the Foxconn delegation discussed the growing semiconductor industry, ESDM prowess and the skilled talent pool available in the state. The meeting in Bengaluru follows one last month between a delegation from Karnataka and Liu at New Taipei City in Taiwan.
