NEW DELHI: Amnesty International<\/a> has come out with a scathing report on Google<\/a> and Facebook<\/a>, calling the two companies \u201csurveillance giants\u201d, whose business models are \u201cinherently incompatible with the right to privacy.\u201d Responding to Amnesty, Facebook disagreed with the report. Google did not offer an on-the-record response to Amnesty but provided input and publicly available documents for the report.
The 60-page report titled, \u2018How the business model of Google and Facebook threatens human rights<\/a>\u2019, criticises the companies\u2019 models of \u201caggregate\u201d people into groups and to make \u201cpredictions about their interests, characteristics and ultimately behaviour - primarily so they can use these insights to generate advertising revenue.\u201d
<\/div><\/div>The report also condemns the companies' \u201cduopoly<\/a>\u201d and their \u201calgorithmic systems, which Amnesty says has \u201cknock-on effects that pose a serious threat to people\u2019s rights, including freedom of expression and opinion, freedom of thought, and the right to equality and non-discrimination.\u201d
