Sustainability and eco-friendly products have been quite the buzzwords amongst big tech companies. Be it Apple, Google or Amazon, the stress on using recycled materials and creating less e-waste has been high on their agendas. Google, however, has taken a march on others it seems. According to a report by The Verge, the tech giant has announced that all its Made by Google products now use recycled materials.

The products include the new Pixel smartphones and Nest smart devices. As per Google’ sustainability systems architect David Bourne, these products are now designed using recycled materials. However, there is a ‘catch’. It’s not as if these products are made of entirely recycled materials but, as per The Verge, “they at least include recycled materials somewhere in the product.”

For instance, the Pixel 5’s back cover is made completely out of recycled aluminium while
Nest Audio has 70% recycled plastic.

“Google’s focus on incorporating recycled materials in our hardware design not only supports our sustainability commitments, but also enables our supply chain partners to confidently invest in and develop these types of materials so that the wider consumer electronics industry can use them too,” Bourne said in a statement to The Verge.

Google further said that in the next five years, all its product packaging will be 100% plastic free and recyclable. “We’ve already made a reduction in plastic use in our packaging since 2016, but we have a lot of hard work ahead in order to meet this new goal,” Bourne further added.

In September this year,
Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed an ambitious plan of running all the company’s operations carbon-free by 2030. “We have until 2030 to chart a sustainable cause for our planet or face the worst consequences of climate change,” Pichai had said in September 2019.
