As user data privacy takes centre-stage across major economies, Google’s head of accounts security and identity, Mark Risher, told TOI that the internet-search giant’s priority in India is to be able to offer tighter security to consumer data outside Google products too, including third party apps.

Risher spoke to TOI during the company’s rollout of its revamped
Safety Centre in India, right after it introduced the same in six European countries last month. The Safety Centre is a single site dedicated to educating and empowering people on topics like data security, privacy controls, and online protections for all of its users. It will be available in nine Indian languages. Risher also said the the flow of crossborder data is tremendously valuable, especially for
small businesses, and that being excessively restrictive over flow of data might result in some of these firms
losing access to global markets. This was in response to the Indian government’s move to mandate storage of certain kinds of data only in India.

Risher said that in data security, the company is always trying to find how it could match expectations even outside Google products. “You will start to see this for not just Google products but other apps too,” Risher said. His comments come in the wake of the new
Google Play Store policy. From next year, accessing a user’s call log, reading SMS or accessing calendar events will become tough for various online platforms, and third party apps on Play Store. Google recently also announced changes that will give more control to users over their search history. The same will be rolled out on other Google products too.
