"Google started off with a search product, and used it to perpetuate monopoly and brought in Android operating system (OS), and forced original equipment makers to bundle apps," Rohan Verma, chief executive and executive director of MapmyIndia told ETTelecom.
The executive said that there should be a level-playing field since Google made it difficult for consumers to opt out of their ecosystem, and explore other options.
Last week, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) argued Google’s appeal against its order holding that the company abused its dominant position in the ecosystem to impose unfair conditions on OEMs at the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT).
On the other hand, Google argued that its OS launched commercially in 2008, contributed to the growth of the mobile industry, and the antitrust watchdog ruling had no legal basis.
Verma said that they are hopeful of the positive outcome.
Last year, CCI held Google accountable for abusing dominance in the Android ecosystem, and slapped a penalty of Rs 1,338 crore ($163 million).
The commission also issued a cease-and-desist order against Google from indulging in anti-competitive practices.
Following the CCI order, the American multinational filed an appeal with the NCLAT, which had though declined to provide any interim relief.
The antitrust body investigated the matter for four years and came up with a list of anti-competitive practices that Google has done to stifle competition and innovation, according to him.
Google's Android holds nearly 96% share in India's 600-million strong smartphone market.
Verma said that the US-based company offers apps pre-loaded including Google maps, and it does not allow consumers uninstall Google maps from devices.
Google can track and target with custom ads even if users don't want them.
"It will be good if the OEM ecosystem is opened up. Alternative rivals to Google as well as consumers suffer in the process," the executive added.
Google rivals have been demanding that the handset manufacturers should be allowed to use multiple operating systems as well as a wide range of apps outside the Google ecosystem.
