“Android devices<\/a> can genuinely improve people's lives through our accessibility features, Google Assistant, digital wellbeing, Family Link, and more — but we can only do this if they are safe and secure enough to earn users' long-term trust,” said the post.
Mishra and Watkins added what all new Google Play Protect features they introduced in 2018. One of it includes the service being switched on by default. All the Android smartphones now come with Play Protect switched on out of the box. Users can turn it off whenever they want.
Another addition that happened this year was notifying users on installing new or rare apps. This means that Google Play Protect always gives an alert if users have installed an app that’s not usual, from the Play Store. The notification asks users to check the authenticity of the app and the source of installation. Once checked, the notification goes away.
Google even introduced a system where the Play Protect warns users when launching apps that seem questionable or can be harmful to the handset. The warning alert lets you uninstall the app or open it anyway.
The service can even auto-disable apps in the user’s device only when permitted. “In 2018, we extended this coverage to apps installed from Play that were later found to have violated Google Play's policies, e.g. on privacy, deceptive behavior or content. These apps have been suspended and removed from the Google Play Store.” The feature removes the app from the Google Play Store but not from the user’s device. This also prevents them from opening the app accidentally.
