"A total of 32 companies (22 MSMEs, 5 Non-MSME domestic and 5 global) have submitted applications.17 of these 32 companies have applied as design-led manufacturers," while 15 have applied for the telecom equipment PLI scheme, the govermnent said in a news release.
"It is heartening that 18 new companies have submitted applications. India is poised to emerge as design and manufacturing hub for telecom and networking equipment," the government added.
DoT didn't provide any names of the applicants.
In its August 26 edition, ET had quoted DoT officials while reporting that 26 companies had applied for the schemes, of which 14 were for telecom equipment PLI and 12 were for design-led PLI. "This was the data till 5 PM on August 25. There were some late applicants which has taken the total to 32," a senior official clarified.
Thursday was the last date to submit applications for the schemes.
As per officials, Samsung is a new entrant to the telecom PLI sheme.
The government will now finalise the companies from the applicants who will be eligible to receive incentives under the plan.
In February, 2021, the DoT had notified the PLI scheme for telecom equipment manufacturing with an outlay of Rs 12,195 crore spread over five years. A total of 31 companies, comprising 16 MSMEs and 15 non-MSMEs including eight domestic and seven global companies were given approval on October 14, 2021.
The scheme was amended in April this year to facilitate design-led manufacturing with an additional incentive rate of 1% over and above existing incentive rates and a quantum of Rs 4,000 crore from the Rs 12,195 crore was set aside for it. Further, additional telecom and networking products were added in the list of eligible products.
Apart from seekingapplications for the design-led scheme, DoT had also sought fresh applications for the second leg of telecom PLI as the outlay for the scheme was not utilised fully. The scheme was extended by one year as a majority of selected companies failed to achieve the production targets due to Covid-related supply chain disruptions.
The government though has said that companies can claim benefits for only five years and not six years. The companies will be given an option to choose FY2021-22 or FY2022-23 as the first year of incentive.
