\nIndia is lagging in fibre rollouts when compared to countries like China and the US while a fibre-based networks is, however, considered to deliver seamless data connectivity.

\nThe top official, however, said that all stakeholders in the country -- central and state governments, local authorities and the industry should partner to facilitate optical fibre rollout in the country which, according to her is imperative for high-speed broadband services.
\n
\"We have 83,000 village panchayats that have optic fibre network in place.
BharatNet<\/a> phase 1 will be completed by December,\" the official added.
\nThe telecom department is aggressively monitoring the prestigious BharatNet initiative that aims to provide Internet connectivity to 2.5 lakh gram panchayats or village blocks by March 2019.
\n
\nBacked by robust fiber infrastructure, the government expects to start broadband services with 1 Gbps speed across 1 lakh gram panchayats by the end of this year under the project.
\n
\nThe mega national program is also expected to give a fillip to reaching out e-commerce services, including e governance, e-education and entertainment services to far-flung areas of the country.
\n
\nBharatNet, previously called National Optice Fibre Network (NOFN) was originally conceived by the UPA-II government in 2011, but has been marred with delayed implementation.
\n
\nThe government, according to her, has started working with telecom service providers to ensure that wired broadband reaches households, and added that it was an area where a lot of work have to be done.
\n
\nSundararajan feels that there were many anomalies in policies at various levels that would need to be aligned for speedy rollout of the digital infrastructure.
\n
\nCiting Mary Meeker’s recent report, Sundararajan said that there were more than 355 million monthly active internet users in India, where nearly 109 million smartphones were shipped in 2016, and added that nearly 46% of internet users in India consume content in local languages. In the first quarter of 2017, 27 million smartphones were shipped.
\n
\nThe finding revealed that most Indians used the Internet on their mobile phones (80% usage was on mobile as compared to the global average of 50%). The most used browser in India was UC Browser, followed by Chrome and Opera. WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Shareit, Truecaller and Facebook are the most used apps in India.

Referring to the study, Sundararajan said that these figures threw up challenges in the
