MANGALURU: The state government notified the Karnataka Installation of New Telecommunication Infrastructure Towers<\/a> Regulations, 2019, which mandates telecom operators to obtain permission from urban local and panchayati raj bodies<\/a> before installing mobile phone towers across the state. Urban development minister<\/a> U T Khader<\/a> told reporters here on Tuesday that the government has taken a decision to introduce the regulations, due to a large number of complaints from people. Commissioners of municipal corporations, municipal councils, chief officer of town municipal counils, town pancyats and panchayat development officers of gram panchayats will be the sanctioning authority to permit erect or re-erect telecommunication infrastructure towers (TIT) in their respective areas. The fee for installation of TITs in Bruhat Bengaluru Mahangara Palike (BBMP) will be Rs 1 lakh and Rs 50,000 in other city corporations in the state. Meanwhile, the fee will be Rs 35,000 in city municipalities, Rs 25,000 in town municipal councils, Rs 20,000 in town panchayats and Rs 15,000 in gram panchayats, Khader said.
“The sanctioning authority will verify and may issue the permit if all criteria mentioned in the regulations are met. The authority also may refuse to issue permit mentioning the reason for refusal. As per the notification dated May 29, 2019, district level and state level committees will be set up to redress grievances. While the district level committee will be headed by the deputy commissioners, at the state level, the committee will be chaired by the secretary to urban development department,” he said.
All operators have been given three months’ time to rectify and comply with the regulations for the existing TITs, he added.
