New Delhi: India’s mobile phone production this fiscal to March 2021 is set to come very close, if not match, last fiscal’s output of devices worth Rs 2.14 lakh crores, despite a 45-day shutdown in factories due to the pandemic with popular brands such as Xiaomi, Realme and Vivo, ramping up production and hiring more personnel.

Handset manufacturing body India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), which was estimating a de-growth of 10-15% in manufacturing output, has now revised its forecast to catch up to FY20 production level due to the stellar sales of smartphones in the festive season.

“This year, due to pandemic, we have had sales loss of more than 45 days due to the lockdown estimated at Rs 30,000-35,000 crores,” said Pankaj Mohidroo, chairman,
ICEA represents phone brands Apple, Xiaomi, Motorola, Nokia, Lava, Vivo, Motorola, Oppo, Realme, Micromax and others, besides contract manufacturers Foxconn, Wistron, Flextronics and Dixon.

“But, looking at the growth of mobile phone segment post lockdown and demand in the festive season, we are now estimating we will achieve the domestic sales number very close to last year, which will be a great achievement by the industry. Our manufacturing is also back to 100% efficiency,” he told ET.

Last fiscal’s domestic market for mobile phones was Rs 1.94 lakh crores, exports were Rs 27,200 crore while imports notched Rs 7,400 crore, as per industry data.

Mohindroo said that while exports will be substantially higher this fiscal due to the government’s thrust with incentives-based schemes, imports will also see a rise.

“Imports have increased during April-July to Rs 5,000 crore against Rs 1,500 crore in last year as manufacturing was disrupted due to lockdown and custom clearance hurdles,” he said.

The year has so far been blighted by the pandemic which saw sales plunge to almost nil from say March end till April due to the complete lockdown owing to the pandemic, prompting market trackers to lower yearly shipment estimates to around the 130 million levels from over 150 million levels. But the July-September period saw record high shipments of smartphones at over 54 million, a 17% on year jump, and Counterpoint Research is projecting the second-half of 2020 to be the best ever for the India market with 100 million shipments.
