Sunil Mittal-driven Bharti Airtel is delivering high-speed in-home broadband services through V-Fiber, while Jio has launched pilot services in three large cities – Mumbai, Pune and Chennai.

Based on European standard Vectorization technology, Airtel’s V-Fiber transforms the in-home broadband experience and has a potential to deliver speeds of up to 100 Mbps in a multi-device or Wi-Fi environment, an Airtel spokesperson told ET.

The market leader is extending its fixed-line broadband presence in tier-1 cities, ahead of Jio’s roll out, with an unlimited three-month free trial offer to new customers.

Jio, owned by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, has also started to make inroads with fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network dubbed as GigaFiber broadband and is offering services free till March 31, with a 100 Mbps data speed in select residential areas of Chennai, Pune and Mumbai regions.

Deployed by Chinese gear maker Huawei, Airtel has already commercially launched V-Fiber-based broadband services in eight cities that include Chennai, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Indore and Bhopal. It has plans to launch it in Delhi-NCR soon.

Rohan Dhamija, head for India and South Asia at Analysys Mason, said home broadband makes sense for service operators only in high average revenue per user (ARPU) clusters in large cities.

“FTTH makes a business case for high ARPU geographical clusters such as high-rise residential buildings, while in India, overhead cabling is also done to address the existing right-of-way (RoW) challenges to accelerate such deployments,” he said.

Dhamija said speed of up to 100 Mbps is a key differentiator and telcos should take account of it while making the capital expenditure.

“Airtel and Jio will get further enhancement if they look at offering bundled fixed-line and mobile services in order to make it quadruple play,” Dhamija added.

India’s home broadband penetration is significantly low with only about 18 million connections and both the top telcos, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio, have stiff competition with local rivals such as Hathway, Spectranet, Tikona and Nextra Teleservices.

“It is not surprising that ambitious telecom players like Airtel and Jio recognize the importance of fibre for future competitiveness and are investing substantial resources for it,” ComFirst director Mahesh Uppal said.

Uppal said fibre is critical to meet the growing demand for Internet-based services, especially entertainment.

“Existing Airtel broadband customers can upgrade to V-Fiber with superfast data speeds at no extra monthly cost. If they are not happy with the service within one month, Airtel will refund the modem charges,” the Airtel spokesperson said.

In 2012, India’s top carrier started FTTH service, which is now available in more than 90 cities with a total customer base of nearly two million. Jio has plans to progressively extend FTTH network to 100 cities in India.

Queries to Jio did not elicit any response.

Meanwhile, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) is also instrumental in leveraging cable television infrastructure for broadband utility, already deployed by telcos’ smaller rivals in 100 million homes.

“If 100 million cable TV homes carry 10 Mbps or more bandwidth, then we can have a reliable broadband infrastructure,” Trai chairman RS Sharma had said earlier.

India is trailing behind nations such as Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore in fixed-line broadband connections.

Sunil Mittal-driven Bharti Airtel is delivering high-speed in-home broadband services through V-Fiber, while Jio has launched pilot services in three large cities – Mumbai, Pune and Chennai.
["Mumbai","Pune","Chennai","Airtel","industry","Bharti Airtel","Wi-Fi","Hathway","Tikona","Spectranet","FTTH","Reliance Jio","home broadband","V-Fiber","Nextra Teleservices.
telecomnews/home-broadband-a-new-battleground-between-rivals-bharti-airtel-and-reliance-jio"}}" data-authors="[" muntazir abbas"]" data-category-name="" data-category_id="" data-date="2017-01-16" data-index="article_1">
