Sandeep Lodha, co-founder, Netweb Technologies. (file photo)

NEW DELHI: Homegrown server maker Netweb Technologies, which is among 14 selected applicants under the Rs 7,350-crore PLI scheme for IT hardware manufacturing, is developing products and solutions that will enable organizations to seamlessly deploy a cloud-based private 5G network, according to a top executive of the company.

“For private
5G, we will be giving them [organization] systems so that they can have their journey seamlessly. For example, they can start small with one system to have a testing environment or to have a DevOps kind of environment and then seamlessly grow to edge cloud, or a full-fledged cloud-based private 5G,” Sandeep Lodha, co-founder, Netweb Technologies told ETTelecom.

"We are not into the radio access side of the normal 5G, radio technology we are not focusing on, we are focusing on the infrastructure or the backend, which is required for example, today the entire backend is changed to a cloud technology and container based stuff," he said.

According to Lodha, private 5G is centered on evolving new use cases, and it is one area where the company is investing significantly.

Netweb sees private 5G to be in demand in the hospitality industry, healthcare sector, manufacturing, and shipping industry, where Wi-Fi may not satisfy the connectivity and reliability requirements as a large number of devices will be hooked to the network.

The
private networks space has been traditionally dominated by European telecom gear majors Nokia and Ericsson. But Lodha believes that the evolution to software-defined functions and open source-driven hardware presents huge advantages and opportunities to Indian technology companies and others to be a part of this ecosystem.

Netweb has a lab working on private 5G which is currently developing a ‘hotspot’ kind of device which can support up to 250 connections; a product for scaling edge, and a Core solution. “So basically, whatever people might be requiring of the 5G setup, we'll be able to provide that,” the executive said.

The Faridabad-based company has opened a new R&D facility in Hyderabad and is close to achieving a headcount of 50 people. The capacity here will be expanded in December 2022.

Netweb has grown 40% to Rs 240 crore in India, and this year, the company will grow over and beyond this figure.

“Netweb’s performance has been very good under the PLI scheme. We have achieved double the target revenue in the first year itself,” Lodha said, adding that the company may more than double its revenue target in the second year of the PLI scheme.

“We have done a good amount of investment about Rs 40 to 50 crore right now. We have a lot of other investments coming up in new facilities, we are almost doubling our capacities. We are coming up with more motherboard manufacturing to support our support this scheme,” he said.

The co-founder said the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has been proactively pushing nodal agencies to settle the payments and claims at the earliest. “I think it's a matter of time before this should get all sorted out.”

ET in its July 21 edition reported that the payments to electronics and hardware makers have been delayed as the nodal agency tasked to review and release incentives – Industrial Finance Corporation of India (IFCI) – has not been able to complete the required audit of claims that have been submitted.

However, the company sees no crunch in funding as it is being funded by internal accruals, the executive said. “We don't have any of those large funding issues.”

The Netweb executive though said strong support from the government is “definitely required” by the industry on account of a high cost of finance as compared to the international companies, suggesting that the Preference to Make in India (PMI) policy should be made effective in order to attract larger investments. He also urged the government to bring more India-specific indicators to international test standards, reasoning that will prevent international brands from getting a comparative advantage.

Netweb expects to start some work in the telecom networks space. Within 3 months, the company may launch a private Cloud solution that can be deployed by organizations for addressing their computing power and storage requirements.

The company’s India headcount is 300. Its customers are present in telecom, IT and ITeS, ISPs, government, and other sectors.
