NEW DELHI: China's Honor brand will need to invest significantly in India to make a comeback and to compete with stronger rivals like Xiaomi and Realme under the new management once the Huawei sale is completed, analysts said.

Huawei Technologies is selling its budget brand smartphone unit Honor to a consortium of over 30 agents and dealers, according to a joint statement signed by 40 companies involved in the purchase. The move is aimed at keeping the brand alive amid supply chain pressures caused by US sanctions.

Huawei will not hold any shares in the new Honor company after the sale, according to the statement, with the buyers setting up a new company, Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology, to make the purchase. The change of ownership will not impact Honor's development direction, the statement said.

"Please stay tuned as we will share more information about our new journey soon," the brand's India spokesperson said in a statement.

"It's good news for Honor in India. Honor has a brand familiarity in India but other brands have scaled up their presence. They will have to start from scratch," Tarun Pathak, associate director at
Counterpoint Research said. Honor has around 0.5% market share in India.

"As the market in the upper end contributes to only 1/4th and Honor products can remain competitive here but it has to invest significantly in India," Pathak said.

Honor currently sells only a few smartphone models that run Huawei Mobile Services (HMS), which is an alternative to Google Mobile Services (GMS). It recently launched budget smartphones -- 9A and 9S -- in the sub-Rs 10,000 price category.

The brand was previously aiming to onboard 5000 mobile applications that are frequently used in India to its HMS or AppGallery, which is now available through its latest Honor 9X Pro smartphone.

To make a comeback under the new management, Honor needs to focus on the price segment along with better design and specification. "It will take a few quarters for Honor to build the momentum if they show commitment and make investments in India. Half-hearted approach will not work in India," Navkendar Singh, research director at IDC said.

Pathak said that Honor's previous success highly relied on the strong R&D support from Huawei. It also shared the supply chain with Huawei to optimize products development costs.

"In the long term, without the R&D support, supply chain sharing and especially the Kirin chipsets from Huawei, Honor will have to rebuild its differentiation, and competitive edge, in the intense market competition," he added.

In the last one year, Honor shifted its focus on Internet of Things (IoT) and laptop categories in India. Having launched smart bands, smartwatches and earphones, Honor was planning to launch Wi-Fi Routers and smart speakers in India.

The brand had also planned to launch its Smart TV, which it may launch in the fourth quarter.
