NEW DELHI: Chinese gear maker Huawei Technologies said that it would support ‘dynamic spectrum sharing’ for the fifth generation or 5G technology based commercial services providing higher network quality, and believes that the next-generation of services are coming in India faster than expected.

“Huawei can help with dynamic sharing of spectrum. So once 5G comes, the biggest use case will be the network quality and experience itself in India,” Huawei India chief executive
Jay Chen told ETT, adding that the 5G would arrive much faster than expected.

In the spectrum-constrained scenarios, dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) allows 5G signals share
4G lanes, and that can actively convert 4G for the 5G usage.

In 2018, the
telecom regulator has recommended 3300-3600Mhz spectrum range for the 5G commercial rollout in India.

With the Indian government sticking to its auction schedule, the top executive said that the industry should not waste time further.

“The auction can happen as per the schedule of the new government. I believe that we don’t have a choice or time to waste on this,” the top executive added.

Chen feels that many other use cases of 5G-based telecom services can be developed from all different verticals and industries.

The Chinese equipment company that has been under scrutiny worldwide with the US putting it on the blacklist, has been arguing that its 5G network technology was safe, and expect the Indian government to take independent decision soon to clear the air.

Earlier, the incumbent carriers—
Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel— have sought clarity from the telecom department on partnering with Huawei for 5G-led filed trials which the government wanted to start in the next 100 days.

The company’s executive said that the Indian government should take decision based on level playing field.

“Policy, standards procedure will provide security benefits for industry and India. It is time for telecom department to make the decision now,” he said, adding that the Chinese firm has been actively engaging with the department for the past 7-8 months, and have answered all the questions they had.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) itself is believed be divided with one group saying that even European network companies could not be trusted, while the other feels that Chinese vendors pose a serious security threat to India.

Recently, AJ Paulraj, chairman of the government-led high-level 5G Forum, citing apprehensions over network technologies from European gear makers such as Ericsson and Nokia, said that they were equally unsafe.

Monday telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the participation of 5G is not conditional on the trial to be started.

Huawei also said that the telecom sector's revenue has been on the decline since 2016.

“In the last 2-3 years, the revenue of the telecom industry has continued to drop while India’s GDP has continued to grow,” Chen said, adding that it was not logical.

In China, according to him, the telecom industry is a key contributor to the growth of the country’s GDP.

“India’s new government has already put the target of becoming the third largest economic power in the world. I am sure that the telecom industry will come back on the right track, to be a leverage power for the economic growth and help achieve the government’s target,” Chen added.
