HYDERABAD: Hyderabad is among the 13 cities to witness 5G (fifth generation) service rollout soon. Experts say telecom tower coverage and optic fiber connectivity may have made the city an ideal choice for the first phase launch. According to officials, telecom tower coverage in the city is one of the highest in the country, better than the national average.

The fiberising of the base transceiver stations (BTSs) is also happening at greater speed in the country. In order to increase datacarrying capacity, India intends to connect up to eight lakh additional mobile towers via optical fiber over the next two years, more than doubling its current capacity.

These two components are necessary for the roll out of 5G services. According to officials,
Telangana is in a better position as it has one of the highest number of towers in the country. By September-end, the number of telecom towers in the state has increased from 25,097 in 2021 to 28,078. The total number of telecom towers in 2020 was 22,245.

Fiber is important to 5G operators for the backhaul portion of their networks. The backhaul serves as the backbone of the network and links it to other networks and sub-networks. Backhaul also ensures transportation of data or network between public access points.

Telecom service providers will fiberise their BT stations installed on mobile towers with 7,93,551 units connected by optical fiber in India. Nearly, 86,000 towers, a vast majority of them in Hyderabad, in Telangana have already been fiberised. The national average for fiberised BTS is 34%. Only a few states, including
Tamil Nadu and Telangana, have more than 36% of such towers.

Furthermore, Telangana optic fiber project (
TFiber) is rapidly expanding. According to reports, in addition to its own mission of launching commercial services broadband, the TFiber will assist in fiber is ROLLOUT JOURNEY TO BEGIN SOONing the towers.

As data travels in the form of light in fiber-optic cables, there is very little signal loss during transmission, allowing data to move at higher speeds and over longer distances. The main impediment to tower and fiber installation is the process, which is complex and time-consuming.

“Telangana is the first country in the state to develop a policy on tower clearances as part of ease of doing business, probably the high cellular density in Hyderabad makes it better placed in the list of first phase roll out of 5G,” a top official, closely associated with T-Fiber, said.

According to officials, Telangana is in a better position as it has one of the highest number of towers in the country
Hyderabad is among the 13 cities to witness 5G (fifth generation) service rollout soon.
