NEW DELHI: The GSM Association (GSMA) has reiterated that India should identify and support 6 GHz band spectrum for the expansion of next generation or 5G services and cost-effective network deployment in the country.

In a letter to the communications minister
Ashwini Vaishnaw, dated February 10, 2022, seen by ETTelecom, the telco group said, "the 6 GHz range is the primary mid-band spectrum to meet the needs for 5G expansion and its timely availability will drive cost-efficient network deployment, help lower the broadband usage gap and support digital inclusion."

The letter comes ahead of the ITU-led World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) 2023 to be held in Dubai later this year.
GSMA also sought India's support for the band at international forums such as Asia Pacific Telecommunity Group and WRC 2023.

London-based GSMA represents more than 700 telecom service providers worldwide including
Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea in India.

"We also look forward to further engaging with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to share our views and priorities of the mobile
industry, and to support India in taking positive steps at WRC-23 to safeguard the future of 5G services for the benefit of billions," the letter added.

This is GSMA's second letter in three months, followed by its top executive calling upon Vaishnaw last month to identify the 6425-7125 MHz range frequencies for wireless services, and seeking country's support at regional and international levels.

"We want India to also understand the importance of 6 GHz for mobile operators and support it for International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) at platforms like APG and WRC. Therefore, we need to make sure that many governments, heads of states are aware of it,"
Mats Granryd, director general of GSMA told ETTelecom during his recent India visit.

Currently, the radiowaves in the 6 GHz band are partly used for satellite operations by the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) in the country.

Brussels-based satellite operators body Global Satellite Operators Association (GSOA), however, said that there are existing operational fixed-satellite service (FSS) networks in the upper 6 GHz band with coverage of Europe and beyond, which require protection from interference from terrestrial services.

Last year, India's wireless planning and coordination (WPC) wing formed a committee with a representation from the

The 3300 MHz spectrum range, identified for commercial 5G services, attracted the highest bids of Rs 80,590 crore in a last year, in which 71 per cent of total airwaves put on sale fetched Rs 1,50,173 crore in a 40-round auction process spanning across seven days.
