""NEW DELHI: Talking about the future of networking at India Mobile Congress, the panel consisting of representatives from Huawei, Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular, Vodafone, IBM and Cisco suggested that the mobile networks need to transform from a data-centric perspective leveraging SDN-NFV to the full maturity.

According to Shyam Prabhakar Mardikar, CTO-Mobile Networks, Bharti Airtel, there are three Cs towards network experience including coverage, capacity and capability setup. “While we are building up capacity in India and data is increasing, we need to ensure massive broadband connectivity and move towards ultra-low latency,” he said.

Vishant Vora , CTO of Vodafone India was of the view that telecom needs to be looked as a separate a horizontal instead of a vertical since it is essential for all industries. “The network that we build has to be agile meaning quick and effective response to the changing environment especially when there is so much capability now on the data analaytics front,” he said.

“When you move from voice-centric to data-centric network, the network has to become smart. However, it's only now that some of the people have started looking at network virtualization,” said
Anil Tandan, CTO of Idea Cellular. “..the need is there to have smart networks as we get into new services.”

Virtualization is bringing more data close to customer. You get the ability to personalize and customize experiences and telcos are having wonderful data and customer database today, believes Gopal Pingali of IBM. “Being able to analyze huge quantities of unstructured data is a step towards cognitive transformation,” he discussed.

While discussing challenges to building future networks, the panel said that they would like to see much more of Artificial Intelligence and other emerging technologies in their networks. Also, as telcos are trying to gain independence from hardware, it is going to be a big transition to switch from hardware vendor to software vendor but it's inevitable, stated Vora.
