“Only thing certain is uncertainty and we have no answer,” Kapania said, adding that the

Telcos were blaming country’s unpredictable regulatory regime as a pain point for faster network roll outs and new technology adoptions, as well as financial stress in the sector.

Given the heavy investment is required, suitable spectrum should be made affordable and policy intervention is critical, the top executive said, adding that a suitable policy intervention is required in the National Telecom Policy 2018 to mitigate cyber security risks.

Top incumbents including Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular and Vodafone India were demanding spectrum prices to be reasonably cut and sought government help including deferred spectrum payments to ease the sector of financial woes.

“This is not just a time for collaboration between network operators but cross sector partnerships such as in hospitality, healthcare, transportation and education would culminate in the delivery of services faster,” Kapania said.

With the 4G-VoLTE, the gap between the technology and time to services has been reduced and india is catching up to the rest of the world, he added.

The telco, according to the executive is looking at offering 15 GB data a month by 2018 which according to him would be consumer expectation and driven by entertainment and commerce content.

Idea Cellular, according to him, will be deploying massive MIMO on TDD network and would also on FDD network in future.

Larry Paulson, president Qualcomm India seconded Kapania’s remarks, and said that there is no policy and regulatory clarity on auction in India which according to the US-based executive is a challenge.

There will be nine to 10 years when 5G would be launched from the time when 4G made its presence in 2010, according to Paulson, who added that there was a seven-year gap between two generations of technologies normally.

Transition between 4G and 5G would be smooth and natural although it is behind three to four years globally.

Swedish gear maker Ericsson, has however, suggested the government to use spectrum between the 3.3 Ghz and 3.6 GHz bands.

“We are suggesting India to use 3.5 Ghz frequencies to rollout 5G services which will allow operators and consumers to take benefit,” Christian Wedeln, head of strategy for business area networks at Ericsson said.

Telcos were blaming country’s unpredictable regulatory regime as a pain point for faster network roll outs and new technology adoptions, as well as financial stress in the sector.
["5G","spectrum","Himanshu Kapania","Telcos","IMC 2017","Industry","India Mobile Congress 2017","idea cellular
telecomnews/imc-2017-regulatory-uncertainty-is-certain-says-idea-cellulars-himanshu-kapania"}}" data-authors="[" "]" data-category-name="" data-category_id="" data-date="2017-09-28" data-index="article_1">
