NEW DELHI: Reliance Jio said that there is a need to manage spectrum cost and address right of way (RoW) challenges to bring India at par with other developed nations in terms of 5G and fiber to the home.
“India is number one in terms of mobile data consumption. We are significantly behind as compared to other nations on fixed line fiber to home, 5G services, the type and size of cloud services and utilization and so on,” Sanjay Mashruwala, managing director of Reliance Jio said at the India Mobile Congress virtual event.
“...we all know what needs to be done and this includes the band and amount of spectrum needed...managing the cost of spectrum simplifying the permissions and mitigating and removing ROW difficulties and cost,” he added. “All have been discussed time and again with limited progress.”
The top executive also said that there is a need to allay radiation related fears in the country.
He said that there is a need to recognize data communication as an essential service. “Rest will fall in place automatically. In 5G is not just about mobility.”
Jio said that the pandemic has proven the need for an affordable broadband centric digital.
The 4G-only Jio is targeting 50 million fiber subscribers and is quickly expanding its JioFiber service in the country. It recently reduced prices of its JioFiber service and now offers an entry-level broadband plan at just Rs 399.
