NEW DELHI: The fixed broadband revenues in India are forecast to increase at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.9% during 2020-25, driven by increase in broadband average revenue per user (ARPU) due to increased adoption of higher value broadband plans by consumers, market analysis firm GlobalData said in a report.

Projected growth in fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) subscriptions due to the government’s initiative to connect 600,000 villages nationwide with the internet will further support the growth in
broadband revenues, said the report.

ETTelecom had reported earlier that the government’s plan to connect every village in India will give a boost to the BharatNet project under the aegis of the
telecom department (DoT) that aims to connect as many as 2.5 lakh village panchayats or blocks encompassing more than 600,000 villages.

Earlier this week, as a first step in the direction of connecting more than 6 lakh villages in 1000 days, PM Modi on Monday launched a project in Bihar that seeks to connect 45,945 villages of BIhar with high-speed optical fibre internet service at a cost of Rs 640 crores.

On the other hand, the fixed communication services market revenues are poised to grow at a CAGR of 4,6% from $6.1bn in 2020 to $7.7bn in 2025, driven by growth in the fixed
broadband services segment.

The fixed voice revenue in India will drop at a CAGR of 1.9% during 2020-2025, due to drop in circuit switched subscriptions and decline in voice ARPU levels over the forecast period, as per the report.

“Though DSL is the primary technology to deliver fixed broadband services in 2020 in India, fiber broadband lines will expand at the fastest CAGR of 15.3% over the forecast period. Growth in fiber broadband lines will be driven by the focus on expansion of fiber-network infrastructure by the government and operators like
Reliance Jio,” said Deepa Dhingra, Telecom Analyst at GlobalData.

The fixed voice and broadband segments will be led by the state-run telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limted (BSNL) primarily due to its strong foothold in the circuit-switched and VoIP services segments as well as in the DSL broadband services, said Dhingra.
