Square cofounder Jim McKelvey’s bio at Nasscom India Leadership Forum 2016 says that “he got a yes to every company he pitched to.” In an interview with ET, McKelvey revealed that he was evaluating investing in two companies — B2B payments enabler MoneyOnMobile and another company (whom he refused to name).

In an interview with ET’s TV Mahalingam & Neha Alawadhi, McKelvey, whose passions include glass blowing, spoke about what keeps him going, his take on the Indian startup scene and working with
Jack Dorsey.

What keeps you busy these days?

My current focus is a non-profit called LaunchCode which is addressing the problem of bridging the huge talent gap in the number of programmers. In the US, President Obama estimates that there are half a million open jobs right now. Last year, President Obama said that LaunchCode should be the model for the United States.

And this was a total surprise to us because we were operating in one city - St. Louis. The White House called me at the last second said: get your ass to Washington DC. President Obama is going to make an announcement. We’re now trying to roll LaunchCode out nationally.

That’s the majority of my time, (and) I am also doing some work with Square of course. My other businesses are all managed by others, but I try to stay involved.

What's your take on the Indian startup scene?

It is fantastic. India has tremendous technical resources, and tremendous connectivity to the rest of the world. The culture here supports
entrepreneurship, and educational systems are relatively open compared to some other countries. that.

What I concern myself with is whether companies have resources they need to solve the problems that they are attacking.

If there is a bubble and the entire ecosystem that funds good ideas breaks down, then I would care, but then I would do something about it. How do you pick a cofounder? I have always looked for people with complementary skill sets. For instance, Jack (Dorsey) and I are very different people. I find that’s very helpful.

Jack and I don’t agree on everything. On the basic stuff we always saw the same way. But on a lot of the executional things we had differences, and I think that’s good.

Have you been in
touch with any Indian companies?

There is a company that’s doing some very innovative work with payments —MoneyOnMobile. They are a B2Bpayment enabler. It works on feature phones, smartphones and on the web, and it enables individuals with phones to make payments and transact in the economy.

That seems like a very interesting area. Are you looking at investing in India? Yes. There are two companies right now that I am personally looking at investing in, via some of the
venture capital funds I have. I can’t name the second one, but the first one that we’re looking at is MoneyOnMobile.

How do you hand-pick startups that you want to
invest in?

Are there any key areas you invest in? I tend to focus on two areas — financial technologies through the two funds I am involved with, and I personally invest in things that I believe need a push, like I have a large investment in a company that has a very radical cancer therapy.

What do you think about the idea that there is a tech bubble?

I honestly don’t pay much attention to that. What I concern myself with is whether companies have resources they need to solve the problems that they are attacking. If there is a bubble and the entire ecosystem that funds good ideas breaks down, then I would care, but then I would do something about it.

Jack Dorsey
