New Delhi: Employees in some sectors will have a Happy Diwali. Seeing an improvement in performance and business sentiment, automobile, information technology, financial services and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies are handing out hikes, bonuses and promotions, according to HR heads and compensation expert Aon. Many had stalled promotions and hikes after the pandemic struck earlier this year, while others fired workers or cut pay.

“Some companies in the auto industry<\/a>, FMCG, engineering, IT services and financial services have done increases as late as October and this is in the range of 6-7%,” said Roopank Chaudhary, partner at Aon. More than a dozen companies, half in the financial services domain, handed out hikes in the last few months, according to Chaudhary, who said he couldn’t disclose their names due to client confidentiality.

ET reached out to companies such as
Dabur<\/a>, Schneider Electric and PepsiCo<\/a> India that have recently given promotions and hiked salaries. Deloitte India paid out the performance based salary component in September while Kotak Mahindra Bank announced promotions and bonuses recently.

Schneider Electric gave out hikes in October. “At Schneider Electric, bonus as well as salary hikes were shared,” said Rachna Mukherjee, CHRO for India & South Asia.

PepsiCo<\/a> India paid incentives and bonuses to frontline employees in September, besides promoting staff. It had given out incentives in March as well.

“While promotions were paused for one quarter, the company restarted the same in September 2020 and had high double-digit promotions across the organisation,” said Pavitra Singh, CHRO, PepsiCo India. “We shall continue to follow the due performance appraisal process ahead as well.”

Whirlpool<\/a> promoted employees and raised pay for a section of employees recently. “This is in addition to the normal hikes and promotions for the year in early March that occurred before the pandemic,” said Sarthak Raychaudhuri, vice president, HR, Asia.

Deloitte India, which announced promotions in early June, handed out performance-based pay in September. “Since we’re evolving into a more performance-based compensation structure, professionals (irrespective of promotions) were also eligible for a commensurate performance pay, which they received in full, in September,” said SV Nathan, chief talent officer, Deloitte India.

Kotak Mahindra restored cuts to the salaries of employees earning more than ₹25 lakh annually in October. “Employees have also received promotions and bonuses as per the annual appraisal cycle,” said Sukhjit Pasricha, president and group chief human resource officer, Kotak Mahindra Bank.

Axis Bank<\/a> has raised salaries by as much as 12% for its staff of more than 75,000 and given yearly bonuses. “The hikes were applicable from October 1,” said Rajkamal Vempati, executive vice president and head of HR. “The hikes ranged from 4% to 12% as per individual performances.”

Many IT firms also recently announced hikes, including TCS and Wipro.

“The salary increase will be across all bands, and it will be similar to what we have done in the past,” said Milind Lakkad, executive vice president and CHRO, TCS.

Others like
Tech Mahindra<\/a>, Mindtree and Titan are planning hikes early next year. “We, at Tech Mahindra<\/a>, have decided to roll out hikes in early 2021,” said Harshvendra Soin, global chief people officer and head of marketing. “However, the quantum of hike has not yet been decided.”

The pandemic forced Titan to hold promotion discussions in August, instead of April. “Salary increases related to promotions were given recently,” said Raj Narayan, CHRO, Titan Industries. The company has not raised pay this year.
