Despite all the noise about the US shutting its doors to overseas talent, Narayen tells ET's Surabhi Agarwal that America is an incredible country for embracing talent and innovation.

He also said that India has made some of the biggest investments in technology in projects such as Aadhaar and the next phase of global product innovation is an opportunity for India to take the lead. Edited Excerpts:

Almost one-third of Adobe's workforce is already here. How do you see India's role in the future?

There isn't an aspect of R&D that we do where we don't look at harnessing the talent of India. On the business side, look at what is happening in India with the prime minister's initiatives. You can argue India has made some of the biggest investments whether it is Aadhaar or eMudhra for signatures.

Digital technology will transform all businesses here, whether it is financial services, telecom, retail or healthcare. There are going to be new business models which will emerge in developing countries first.

And in partnering with companies which are leading - whether what Aditya (Birla) is doing in Banking or what Mukesh (Ambani) is doing in telecommunications, it's a win-win. They get access to latest technology and we get access to tough leaders who are pushing the envelope.

Computers are already designing sarees in India. Do you see any threat from AI to your business?

In my lifetime, my perspective is that there will always be room for human creativity and ingenuity. We may have to change in terms of what we focus on but that storytelling, that emotional affection, and that great creativity will stay.

Computers can automate repetitive tasks but I don't think it will ever replace human ingenuity.

India is becoming a big market for global tech companies, but revenue contribution remains minuscule, do you see that changing?

I think for us, when desktop software was there, there was a lot of piracy. But today revenue is high because people recognise the importance of intellectual property. We are pleased with the growth so far and there is a lot more growth ahead of us. Every time I come here, I look at the next generation and their propensity to spend and that only augurs well for companies like us.

You are one of the biggest benefactors of the US immigration system. What is your view on the current administration's policy?

We will go where the talent is. I am excited about the investment that all the countries are making around human capital because that's what drives us. I still think that the US is an incredible country in terms of opportunity and the fundamental nature of the US economy is that they embrace talent and innovation. There is tremendous opportunity in India too. It is up to us to navigate the policies and make the best of both worlds.

What do you think of the current crop of companies in the Valley and in India?

Entrepreneurship is alive and well. Access to capital has perhaps become a little too easy so there are a lot more companies that are being founded. So maybe finding the diamonds in the rough becomes a little harder. But what drives the Valley, in particular, is that everyone looks at the company that succeeded and believes that they can be another one which can succeed.

I think the Internet revolution in services like happened in the US is happening here if you think about retail and ride sharing. I think the next phase of fundamental product innovation and global innovation is an opportunity for India. Whether entrepreneurs here will step up and capitalise the opportunity? Your guess is as good as mine.

India has made some of the biggest investments in technology in projects such as Aadhaar and the next phase of global product innovation is an opportunity for India to take the lead, said Narayen
["Adobe India","Shantanu Narayen","Adobe","industry","US Immigration","Interviews
telecomnews/india-is-poised-to-lead-next-phase-of-product-innovation-adobe-ceo-shantanu-narayen"}}" data-authors="[" surabhi agarwal"]" data-category-name="" data-category_id="" data-date="2018-02-20" data-index="article_1">
