Where does India lie in your global plans? How important is India as a market on its own and when compared with other developed markets including China?

India has become the most important market for OPPO besides its domestic market. According to GFK, OPPO ranks at no. 2 in India offline market in December 2016 and also the No. 4 smartphone brand for the 2nd consecutive year according to IDC. Nowadays, more than 10 crore young users are using OPPO phone globally.

Being a price sensitive market, the Indian consumers have a unique set of needs and demands. As a brand we are trying to offer products that appeal to a wide set of audience. The way Indian consumers choose and buy smartphones is continuously evolving and as a brand we need to have a diverse portfolio of products and price points to appeal to a wide range of consumers.

What will be the total investment OPPO will make in India in 2017-18?

We have always focused on being present across all touchpoints to offer the best services to our consumers. OPPO will continue localization in product, manufacturing and employees in the coming year.

Will OPPO begin exporting out of India? If so, when and to which countries? And which products?

In the next 2-3 years, in line with our plan, we will begin exporting the manufactured phones out of India to Middle East, North Africa and other South Asian markets. Currently the products offered to our Indian consumers are made in India.

What will be the company’s marketing and branding budget for 2017-18? Deepika Padukone has been brought on as the new brand ambassador. Do Sonam Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan continue to be part of the brand as well?

In 2017-18, OPPO’s marketing and brand strategy will continue to focus on 2 platforms - entertainment and sports to reach our target young users. In line with this endeavour, we have recently signed Bollywood actor and global icon Deepika Padukone as our new brand ambassador.

How many models the company is planning to launch this year and how will they be priced compared to earlier models?

Based on OPPO’s “Simple and Focused” strategy, this year, we will have one phone for every price segment.

The new F3 Plus is positioned to cater to the premium-segment and the soon-to be launched F3 will be available in the mid-range category and entry-level segment for the A series. So for each price segment, we have a model that has received a phenomenal response.

The company has begun SMT manufacturing in India. What is the investment made into this? How many lines and what it the production capacity? How quickly will it be expanded?

The SMT manufacturing facility is still under the process of construction and we will share an update soon at the appropriate time.

Can you share the status of the manufacturing plans in UP, for which OPPO has signed a MoU with the UP government for investing Rs 2,000 crore?

We already have one assembly factory in Noida that began production in July 2016. The rest is still under construction process and we will share an update on the same at an appropriate time.

We understand the OPPO factory in Greater Noida is still shut. What kind of losses is the company experiencing?

The OPPO factory in Greater Noida is fully operational in its full capacity. There was no impact on the supplies because of the production of our overseas units.

What is the company doing to bring it back online? Will imports be increased in the short term to meet the local demand, now since local production has been halted? Will that increase the retail cost of phones being offered to consumers?

While so far the company’s focus has been to expand the offline market, for our online buyers, we have partnered with Flipkart, Snapdeal, Amazon and PayTM to open our sales window for the online buyers. Online buying and selling being a growing trend, within next 2-3 years, we may invest more in the online channels.

India is going to implement a uniform goods and services tax (GST) regime that looks to do away with countervailing duties, among others, which may disrupt the duty differential offered to companies manufacturing mobile phones in the country. How will this impact your company’s local manufacturing plans?

We will comment on the impact of GST at the appropriate time.

Will future investments be stalled? What happens to existing investments if duty differential goes away?

We will comment on the possible impact of the duty differential at an appropriate time.

What are the interesting facets that make India stand apart from other markets?

India is one of the fastest adoptor of smartphone technology and has been amongst the first to adopt 4G technology from the 2G-3G technology. Being a diversified market, India is also a market which transfers from feature phone to smartphone and requires good quality phones with affordable price.

The Indian users usually pay attention to three aspects before making the purchase decision: battery, storage and camera. Based on these insights, OPPO first launched selfie-focused phones for India market specifically to cater to the growing needs and demands of Indian consumers.

With the growing economy, more and more Indians are paying more attention on premium phones and do not mind paying a little extra to get a better experience from their phone. A latest example is the recently launched new OPPO’s F3 Plus that has received good response for orders and makes us believe in the trend that Indians are willing to pay more for that better camera phone experience.
