NEW DELHI: 5G spectrum across all bands should be made available at reasonable prices for network roll out, Ericsson India's top executive said. He also recommended that 200MHz of spectrum should be made available to each operator in the mid-band (3.5GHz to 6GHz) and a minimum of 400MHz spectrum in the millimeter-wave (24GHz and above).

“I believe that we should enable that the complete 5G spectrum is available in India. And when I say the entire available spectrum or entire 5G spectrum, it's both mid and millimeter wave bands,” said Nitin Bansal, Managing Director,
Ericsson India and Head of Network Solutions, Southeast Asia, Oceania and India, Ericsson.

Bansal was addressing delegates virtually at the second-edition of ETTelecom’s
Digital Telco Summit.

The telecom regulator recently started a consultation process for setting up base price across 10 frequency bands for the commercial launch of 5G services. Once the process is completed, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will start the auction process.

5G spectrum sale and network rollouts are expected to take place in the second quarter of 2022.

5G, he said, should be perceived as a platform innovation and it has a socio-economic multiplier effect.

“I would say that we should look at 5G as a platform for innovation. So, it has a socio economic multiplier effect… you know, an increase in internet connectivity has a direct correlation to the GDP of the country. And it is also to be considered as a critical infrastructure both for consumers and industries,” Bansal said.

“5G again will not only help the consumers in getting better access to the network's but it will also accelerate the digitalization of industries and also strengthen the foundation of Digital India. So it's about digitalization, it's about automation,” he said.
