NEW DELHI: India’s networking market, comprising Ethernet Switch<\/a>, Routers, and WLAN segments declined 16.4% on-year in 3Q20 on account of decline in the router revenues, said a report by market tracker International Data Corporation<\/a>’s (IDC<\/a>) on Thursday.

The
router segment<\/a> led by Cisco<\/a> with a 64.4% market share in 3Q20 followed by Juniper and Nokia<\/a>. It witnessed a decline of 40.2% on-year and stood at $57.7 million.

<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>The routing segment witnessed a decline due to the decline in investment from the services provider segment. However, its growth was driven by SD-WAN adoption by the banking sector in the enterprise segment.

Recovery for the routing segment is expected to happen in the first half of 2021, said the report.

The ethernet switch market was dominated by Cisco with a 59.8% share during 3Q20, followed by
Huawei<\/a> and Hewlett Packard<\/a> Enterprise (HPE). The Ethernet switch market in India stood at $136 million registering an on-year decline of 8.8%. Both DC and Non-DC segments posted an on-year decline.

<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>The banking sector provided continuous investments during the Covid-19 period and additionally, the consolidation within the sector greatly boosted the revenues, noted the report.

IDC said it expects the market to fully recover by 1H 2021 subject to the pandemic's prognosis across the country.

While all the segments in the networking market declined, the WLAN m=segment witnessed an on-year growth of 3.1% during 3Q20 to stand at $60.9 million, driven by consumer gateway routers, according to the report.

<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>With a market share of 29.8%, TP-Link was the market leader in the WLAN segment<\/a>, followed by D-Link due to the rapid increase in demand for consumer gateway routers. The enterprise-class WLAN segment was led by Cisco followed by Hewlett Packard Enterprise.

While enterprise-class WLAN took a significant decline of 25.7% on-year, the consumer gateway router demand picked rapidly by 36.7% on-year due to increased demand for work from home.

Public hotspot initiative projects, such as PM WANI is expected to boost the growth of wireless infrastructure business in the country thereby enabling an effective last mile to fuel growth in the tier-2 and tier-3 cities of India, noted the report.

“In short, COVID-19 has accelerated the pace of network transformation which will transform to self-healing\/self-driving networks of tomorrow,” he concluded.

IDC India forecasts that the ethernet Switch, router, and WLAN markets are expected to grow in single digits in terms of CAGR during 2018-23. The research agency also expects large investments for 5G rollouts in the next couple of years.
