The market grew 11% year-on-year in 2021 even as the year witnessed a more virulent second wave of Covid-19, and the resulting supply chain disruptions coupled with price increases due to the ongoing component shortages, the firm said.

The shipments were driven by increased adoption and demand for
5G smartphones, which according to Counterpoint, contributed 17% to the overall shipments, representing six-fold growth over 2020.

“The price of entry-level
5G devices has come down by 40% in the last six months. The increase in affordability of 5G devices has been a key reason for high 5G smartphone adoption,” it highlighted.

Counterpoint revealed that consumer demand remained high in the higher price bands, or above Rs 20,000 bands, in 2021. Shipments in these bands grew 96% year-on-year while the retail Average Selling Price (ASP) also grew 13% year-on-year.

Going forward, the Hong Kong-headquartered firm expects the market to grow by “double digits” with a “healthy contribution of the mid-to-high end 5G smartphones”.
