NEW DELHI: India has surpassed 2.5 million registrations of .in, a localised domain name, becoming the second-largest nation in Asia in the country-centric top-level domain growth, according to the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI).
"I am happy to inform you that we have already crossed a major milestone of 2.5 million," NIXI chief executive Anil Kumar Jain told ETTelecom, and added that India has the highest adoption of localised domain names after China, and expects to become top country across the region soon.
Delhi-based Nixi acts as an autonomous body for the maintenance of .in domain, and facilitates the exchange of domestic Internet traffic under the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY).
The agency wants that .in domain should be adopted by Indians, and said that the people still feel that .com as the international domain whereas .in is considered to be an Indian domain which it said, is a myth now.
The .in domain is a part of country code top-level domain or CCTLD.
"We are able to catch up and the gap between .com and .in has been narrowed down at a low level, and we hope that by the middle of this calendar year, we should be able to cross .com," the top official said.
Jain said that in a localised domain regime, the cyber security and data privacy threats are well taken care of by having servers domestically.
