Companies will have to engage customers, help them decide what to buy, sell them their product and finally reward their loyalty if they have to be successful in the new online retail marketplace, a study by advisory firm The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) titled 'Decoding Digital Consumers in India' said on Thursday.

BCG predicts that India will have more than 850 million online
users by 2025, which is more than the combined population of the group of seven (G7) countries. These users not only will socialise, window shop and read Bollywood news but also will use the internet for a broader activities online.

By 2020, BCG expects half of the internet users to be from the rural areas, 40% of which will be women and 33% will be 35 years or older. Besides socialising, these users will use the internet for consuming media, pursuing studies, managing finances, and also shopping.

""

BCG has classified these opportunities into "eight S's" namely see, select, search, socialise, shop study, save and sell. The advisory firm expects the so-called digitally influenced spending, to rise ten times from $45 billion to $50 billion a year currently to between $500 billion and $550 billion-and to account for 30% to 35% of all retail sales-by 2025.

"To maintain relevance and increase sales and share, companies need to take four steps: focus on solutions rather than products, build networks of partnerships, invest big and differently in digital, and consider omnichannel-one channel at a time," BCG said.

The BCG report is the first of two publications on the impact of digital technologies on consumer behavior in two of the world's largest and fastest-growing consumer markets-India and China. The report on India will be followed by one on China.

BCG tracked the online activity of a subset of 35 consumers, chosen for their diversity in terms of age, location (including both urban and rural residents), income, and gender with a goal to capture exactly what individuals did, where and when they did it, and the reasons why.

The report said companies should focus on solutions over products, build a network of partnerships, invest big and different in digital and consider developing one channel at a time.

"In the future, more and more Indians will do more and more things online, but individual users will approach the digital experience in their own ways and integrate digital tools into their lives in the manner they see fit. There is a massive opportunity for companies that understand this diversity and know how to engage digital consumers as individuals. These companies will build relationships, collect data, and create experiences that will lead to a large and growing online (and offline) customer base for years to come," BCG said.
