While the overall market dropped down by 31% on-quarter, there was a strong year-on-year growth with shipments up by 72%.
“Regional lockdowns, during April and May, in response to the second pandemic wave contributed to the decline. However, shipments bounced back in June. Xiaomi replaced Samsung at the top in terms of overall shipments for the second time in the last 3 years,” said Shipra Sinha, Analyst-Industry Intelligence Group, CMR.
Xiaomi led the market in Q2 with a 29% share, followed by Samsung (17%), and Vivo (15%).
Realme stood in the fourth position with a 15% share and its shipments grew by 142% on-year, while Oppo with a 10% share saw its shipments grow by 120% on-year.
Realme also led the 5G smartphone segment with a 24% market share followed by OnePlus at 21%.
Apple logged a 138% on-year growth in shipments and a 70% share in the super-premium smartphone segment (Rs 50,000-1,00,000).
Driven by the strong consumer demand, 4G smartphones accounted for 87% market share.
In contrast, the 5G smartphone shipments accounted for 13% of the overall smartphone shipments in Q2 2021.
Lastly, the feature phone segment increased 44% on-year due to the low base effect. The 2G feature phone segment grew 27% on-year, with Itel (25%), Lava (20%) and Samsung (17%) capturing the top three spots.
For the entire year, CMR estimates a potential 5-8% on-year growth in smartphone shipments.
“We remain cautiously optimistic about the smartphone market in H2 2021. We expect smartphone shipments to be robust, driven by the early festive sales, attractive offers, and continued consumer demand for smartphones as a major life enabler amidst the pandemic. The fragile supply chain and a potential third COVID wave are variables at play that may hurt the market recovery,” added Anand Priya Singh, Analyst- Industry Intelligence Group, CMR.
