Indian users may not be willing to pay Rs 719 for Twitter's blue check mark when it is rolled out here, social media experts and brand strategists told ET. 印度用户可能不愿意支付719卢比Twitter的蓝色复选标记时推出,社交媒体专家和品牌战略家告诉等。
India is a price-centric market across segments, and is cautious about every rupee spent, they added.
Monetising a Twitter handle and paying money each month may not be an option that Indians would be excited about, Harish Bijoor, business and brand-strategy specialist, and founder, Harish Bijoor Consults Inc, told ET.
Over time, people will learn to recognise those handles that have the original verified status and those that have bought their way in, he said.
“Particularly in mediums that are all about content, the unbought blue tick garners more respect than something which is bought,” Bijoor said, adding that people will pay for an advertising medium, not a content medium.
Twitter handles will soon be paid for if they are business handles, but not if they are for personal use, he said.
Other experts said users would be more than willing to 'pay for clout online' but this comes with its own set of challenges, the foremost being misinformation and the possible proliferation of fake accounts.
Twitter, as predicted by commentators, on Friday suspended its $8 subscription programme to combat a growing problem of users impersonating major brands.
Musk's bid to bring in a subscription-based model for verification could lead to the coveted blue tick losing its value, they had said.
“Paid Twitter verification may eventually lead to the blue tick losing its value if it becomes too easily available,” said Aparajita Bharti, founding partner, TQH Consulting.
In the near term, she said it may lead to 'rampant misinformation' and 'chaos' as users tend to trust accounts with blue ticks currently and it would take time for everyone to adapt to this change.
Law enforcement and government agencies also use verified Twitter accounts to disseminate important public information. “Twitter will have to make an effort to identify these public services separately so that paid blue tick accounts in their names are not used to cause harm and fraud," Bharti said.
Soumitra Pathare, the director of Pune-based Centre for Mental Health Law & Policy, took to Twitter to say that he was getting off the microblogging platform since he strongly disagreed with new owner Elon Musk's way of revamping its verification process by charging a fee for the blue tick mark.
"I strongly disagree with this policy, it will compound the problem, not solve it. I am not deleting my account as it is a public record, and I don't want someone to use this handle and impersonate me. But not using Twitter from now on," he said.
On being asked whether the Ministry of External Affairs would pay $8 for a blue tick subscription service, a spokesperson for the ministry said it would decide “based on the contours of the subscription service.”
Manish Maheshwari, the former chief of Twitter India, however said that there “would be an adjustment phase, but I think it (paying for that blue tick) is a very reasonable proposition that will take off in India.”
Elon is looking at promoting a freemium model where 90% of the users would have access to the platform for free while 10% or so would pay.
One also has to keep in mind that it is not for the blue tick alone that users pay $8, there are a number of other additional perks that they will get - be it lesser ads or the ability to make longer format videos or even access to other premium accounts and content, he said.
However, he too raised concerns over whether a user should be able to 'buy their way to blue ticks.' He believed that one should be 'notable and worthy' of being verified and then pay to get the blue tick.
For a country that loves freebies, whether in politics or grocery shopping, industry watchers said that Twitter with its niche audience would not have trouble convincing their users in India to pay about Rs 719 every month, if that would mean they can keep the blue tick as a mark of their credibility.
"Our research shows that people are regularly interacting with Twitter to get a blue tick," said Vishal Sengar, Founder/CEO & Chief Brand Strategist, Brand Provoke Consultants.
"I have no doubt that people would be willing to pay for a blue tick and that is what concerns me too because if the protocol is that people can pay to get a blue tick, then that verification itself will lose its credibility," Sengar said.
Small content creators and influencers may not be willing to pay but those who are more recognised, will not hesitate to pay, he said.
Further, there were others who said that there are two kinds of users on Twitter - those who barely tweet and are there to consume content, who will continue to use the app free of cost.
And a second category of users who actively tweet and will willingly pay as their following, power and influence is mainly on Twitter.
"As of now, these users have been enjoying the clout that Twitter provides without any charge," an executive at a social media company told ET on the condition of anonymity.
People in India today are willing to pay for dating apps, OTT platforms and numerous other services so if there is someone who wants to share their opinion and leverage Twitter for that, they would not have any problem paying, the executive said.
Vineet Recriwal, Chief Operating Officer, Jajabor Brand Consultancy said through its paid verification model, Twitter has identified a potential revenue stream for the platform but there are hiccups early-on in its rollout.
Ironically, Twitter verification badges were introduced by the company to solve the issue of rampant impersonation on the platform and now the very motive behind account verification seems uncertain, he said.
With the availability of a paid verification option, instances of impersonation have come to light.
Over the years, one has developed trust towards certain individuals and personalities on the platform, purely on their opinion and content, most of them unverified, since they did not bother to get their Twitter handles verified, Recriwal said.
They earned the trust despite not having a ‘blue tick’.
Now differentiating between the real profiles from the fake blue tick impersonations could be difficult and might impact the way the audiences resonate with Twitter as a platform, he said.
