Google tax which is applicable to non-resident e-commerce companies in India has doubled for FY21, the Business Standard reported on Wednesday.

The total tax collected in FY21 was Rs 2057 crore against Rs 1136 crore collected in FY20 which is nearly 81% higher. In the FY21, due to the pandemic and social distancing norms, the revenue of these companies increased which further lead to increase in tax collections from them.

The biggest contributor to the
Google tax was Bengaluru which accounted for nearly 50% i.e. Rs 1020 crore which was then followed by Hyderabad at Rs 538 crore. It was then followed by Delhi and Mumbai contributing nearly Rs 323 and Rs 134 crore respectively.

The main idea to levy
Google Tax is to bring foreign companies under Indian taxation system. A multi-lateral deal on OECD (Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development) is much awaited as these companies make a huge chunk of profit in India.
