\n“For the next wave of growth, we are talking about digitalization and the consumer experience. That consumer experience, if you need to give, we as the industry need to be looking at how the street furniture can be used for tapping the smart city opportunities. We have already tapped into a couple of opportunities,” Shankar Iyer, chief sales and marketing officer at Indus Towers, told ET in a recent interaction.

\n“We, as an IP 1 license holder, if get the support from the government agencies, can bring the infrastructure readiness for technologies like 5G,” he added.

\nThe executive said that over the last two decades, the industry has put together close to 500,000 tower locations for coverage and capacity in the country. And, now the industry, he said, is seeing a good opportunity by utilize that street furniture and bring smart infrastructure.

“The erstwhile tower used to have just antennas and the microwave, while in these smart elements, you are able to utilize the space not only for putting up the
telecom equipment<\/a> but also surveillance systems and environment sensors,” Iyer said. “Bringing ease to the citizens will bring an opportunity for us.”

\nSpeaking about the Right of Way rules, the executive said, “some of the state governments have actually given the light for the infrastructure to be put.”

The
RoW<\/a> rules are considered as a key enabler for expediting the deployment of underground (optical fibre<\/a>) and over ground (mobile towers) infrastructure in India. The rules aim to rationalise administrative expenses across the country to a maximum of Rs 1000 per km for fibre, and a maximum of Rs 10 000 per application for overhead towers.

The rules mandate development of an electronic application process within one year of the roll-out of ROW rules, single clearance window for application, designation of nodal officers for appropriate authorities, and fast-tracking decision on RoW permits to within 60 days after application are expected to facilitate a transparent, economical and rapid rollout of fibre
backhaul<\/a> in the country.
