Mathew Oommen, President of Reliance Jio Infocomm at fifth edition of ETTelecom 5G Congress (2022).

NEW DELHI: The telecom industry would need affordable and adequate fifth generation or 5G mid-band spectrum of 100 MHz (megahertz) or more, and the sector has made commendable progress on trials and use cases, a top executive of Reliance Jio Infocomm said, and sought full millimeter-wave (mmWave) spectrum.

"We require affordable and adequate
5G mid-band spectrum 100 megahertz or more, and the industry has made good progress on trials and use cases," Mathew Oommen said, adding that the full millimeter-wave spectrum band should be auctioned to deliver real 5G service.

Oommen was speaking at the fifth edition of the ETTelecom 5G Congress - 2022.

Industry players led by the
Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) and GSMA, have been demanding a price-cut in the base price for 5G airwaves, and adequate quantum of radiowaves including millimeter-wave (mmWave) spectrum.

Millimeter or mmWave spectrum includes 26GHz, 28GHz and 37GHz bands which according to the industry can drive full 5G potential.

"Let the industry deliver the best experience to its customers leveraging the maximum benefit from the capital investments. In fact, let's set the record straight that India will follow. Same service, same rules in provisions of connectivity and communication services," Oommen said.

Oommen believes that 2022-2023 would be a very important year for the industry and nation. "We as service providers need to be the anchor and enabler for creating the new digital infrastructure. This is to be the building block for emerging India and strengthening India's infrastructure across multiple sectors," he said.

The executive said that the industry is best positioned to lead India through the digital transformation into the new metaverse and web three 3.0 economy. "Together. I sincerely believe with the right policies and investments, we can unleash the full potential of our industry and new India."

To ensure a self-reliant and a secure inclusive digital society, he said, that the country must have adequate data protection that protects the critical data of users, businesses, without limiting any innovation or growth.
