NEW DELHI: Indian telecom operators may find it challenging to create a commercial viability for a number of unique use cases that are going to emerge for 5G. In that scenario, vertical-focus will aid telcos in monetizing 5G properly, executives of California-based network equipment provider Viavi explained.

“Use cases for 5G in India are unique however telecom operators need to ascertain what use cases will work the best for the country and how 5G can be deployed in a cost effective manner to cater to such use cases,” said Paul Gowans – wireless strategy director,
Viavi solutions in an interaction with ET.

Viavi Solutions, formerly part of
JDS Uniphase, manufactures testing and monitoring equipment for networks. The company has Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio as its clients in India to whom the company is majorly responsible for providing location intelligence services.

Internet of Things (IoT) also brings a lot of opportunities for telcos, especially for deploying large-scale sensor networks. In such networks, one can put sensors on devices or elements which can be further used for a host of things such as asset tracking, Eng Wei Koo – technology expert at Viavi Solutions told.

Gowans told that the company worked with
Airtel for bench-marking user experience across 3G and 4G while taking into account the performance of users’ handsets.

“We looked at whole range of unique handsets and we got 8000 unique handsets with different and unique characteristics. We evaluated performance against a set of criteria including coverage, capacity, quality for determining how we set minimum requirements of service quality,” he said.

Koo said that the India telecom market is operating at low average revenue per user (ARPU) and there are worries around the cost of the spectrum. Amidst all this, Indian telecom operators are setting test beds to explore what use cases can emerge out of 5G.

This is where vertical push will help operators in India to monetize 5G properly since operators have massive amount of data and analytics to support all the verticals. Open industries such as tourism, retail can benefit more from analytics which operators can monetize, Koo explained.

“I think major
industry driver in India is the rural areas that don't have access to broadband. We're not looking at 1GB/sec for every household when even 1MB/sec would make a lot of difference for people who don't have decent broadband today,” the executives expressed.
