NEW DELHI: 5G is driving the “Jio 2.0” opportunity, given the transformational impact that the fifth-generation technology will have in the home and the enterprise segments, said the telco’s president, Kiran Thomas.

“Looking beyond consumers’ homes, if you look at our enterprises and SMBs, the 5G services are powering not just connectivity, but a slew of software services which are now starting to bundle along with our 5G services and 4G services as we make more inroads into the enterprises,” said Thomas in a call with analysts Friday.

“We can really imagine that 5G is really driving what we call the Jio 2.0 opportunity with the transformational impact that will have in mobility in home as well as in the enterprises,” he said.

5G has the advantages of high bandwidth and low latency. It is said to underpin several new use cases in the consumer segment such as cloud gaming, enhanced mobile broadband, fixed wireless access (FWA), augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) among others, whereas in the enterprise segment, it could drive private 5G service, smart manufacturing,
Industry 4.0, connected machinery, etc.

At the same time, Jio is targeting the commercial launch of its 5G FWA solution,
Jio AIrFiber, in the coming months.

The telco has validated AirFiber's service stability, radio frequency planning (RF) planning, and installation model through pilots in a few locations, according to Jio’s parent,
Reliance Industries (RIL)’s analyst presentation for Q4FY23.

Jio is aiming to connect 100 million connected homes (fibre+5G) with its FWA solution. Analysts recently said that FWA is the best bet for India’s top two telcos Jio and Bharti Airtel to monetise 5G.

“If you look at the number of sites which have been deployed, we are present today in more than 60,000 sites, which cumulatively mean that we have deployed more than 3,50,000 5G cells across these 2300 cities,” said Thomas.

“So this is by far the fastest 5G rollout of this scale anywhere in the world,” said Thomas, adding that the telco would have also largely replicated its 4G footprint with its 5G footprint as well by the end of this year.

They, though, said mass uptake of FWA services won’t happen unless the cost of a key router device (read: customer premise equipment or CPE) drops to $100 from around $200 now.
