Mumbai: Bharti Airtel is targeting small and medium businesses, and government projects to grow its cloud and content delivery business, a senior executive said.

It is doing this by introducing differentiated cloud and content delivery network (CDN) products which cater to various levels of storage needs for clients, all leveraging the telco's existing connectivity infrastructure, Ganesh Lakshminarayanan, chief executive of enterprise business and business head of cloud at
Airtel Business, told ET.

“Cloud is the fastest growing technology spend among customers. Today, only 30% of the overall compute is on the cloud which means that it's still whitespace (for us to corner),” he said.

“Our interest in cloud is to leverage our infra better, which include our data centres and connectivity,” he added.

Airtel’s cloud offerings have been divided into various segments, each catering to different target groups of customers.

The
Airtel Vultr Cloud is a public cloud offering for beginners, bundled with the telco’s connectivity, while its Sovereign Cloud targets banking clients and government projects.

The recent cloud and CDN mandate for
Diksha, the government's edtech initiative, will be executed using the Airtel Cloud offering. Airtel will be responsible for the management of Diksha’s online platforms.

With
public sector units making the transition to cloud, there are requirements like data localisation and compliance which Airtel satisfies, and can capitalise on, Lakshminarayanan said.

The Sovereign Cloud started with the telco launching a banking cloud a few months back, on top of which the government community will be built, starting with the project for Diksha.

While he did not divulge more details, Lakshminarayanan said Airtel is actively pursuing government tenders in multiple sectors to expand the cloud business.

“Some of these bids are ongoing and I would not be in a position to disclose (those), but the government is investing in digitising (its business), which is going to result in a lot of storage and content (delivery) requirements,” he said.

The CDN offerings are aimed at clients dealing in large amounts of video content. “CDN is going to be important for consumption as more videos coming to mainstream people will need a reliable CDN for an effective delivery of that video content,” Lakshminarayanan said.

For telco customers, this will mean the lowest latency since they will hit Airtel’s CDN first while consuming content on digital, which will mean lower video failure rate, or buffering as is known, he explained.

Airtel is also preparing to bulk up its edge compute offerings, anticipating future use cases, using its data centre and connectivity infrastructure.

“Things like autonomous vehicles, drones, gaming and AR/VR (augmented reality/virtual reality) need low-latency computing and edge computing is going to be crucial, so we will be investing in that,” Lakshminarayanan added.
