A department of telecom (DoT) report mentions new initiatives, including the Cell on Wheel (CoW)-BTS, to boost 5G services. Cell-on-wheel is basically a small cell tower mounted on a truck to improve signal quality.
This was deployed by a few telecom service providers (TSPs) in coordination with the DoT Gujarat team. New sites were also radiated with 5G services, like those near GIFT City in Gandhinagar for the first time. None of the telecom service providers (TSP) had launched their 5G services in Diu, but now the DoT claims the installations for these services are being made in Diu well before the G20 summit takes place there in May.
The DoT report shared with TOI mentions a few other interventions to improve 5G services, especially signal quality at respective airports of major cities in the state, with the installation of indoor or micro-BTS as well as additional equipment for improving indoor mobile coverage.
“At Bhuj and Surat airports, poor coverage was observed at certain areas inside the terminals. The airport authorities allowed telecom service providers (TSP) to install their indoor or micro-BTS devices there,” says DoT, Gujarat License Service Area (LSA), senior deputy director general, Gunjan Dave, in the report.
The DoT team had conducted an 840km mobile network drive and static data testing for 5G services in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and areas adjoining airports near Surat and Ahmedabad.
At far-flung places 5G coverage was ensured, like at the Unesco’s world heritage site at Rann ki Vav in Patan, the Sun Temple in Modhera, Bhuj Airport and isolated areas like Dhordo and Dholavira in Rann of Kutch. “In Diu, five new mobile sites for 5G services were earmarked, especially near Malala Auditorium, Jalandhar Guest House, Diu Fort and Khufri. The mobile-BTS at these sites will be active before May,” adds Dave in the report.
