The deals are a positive outcome for Disney Star, which is seeking to maximise audience reach for the Indian Premier League<\/a> (IPL) on TV amidst stiff competition from rival Viacom18, which is streaming the IPL for free on the Jio Cinema app.
The three MSOs, which are backed by Reliance Industries<\/a>, had previously threatened to remove Disney Star's channels from their base bouquets from April 1 due to an increase in bouquet rates. After the deal, Disney Star's 70+ channels spanning multiple languages and genres will remain available to 18-20 million cable TV subscribers in India<\/a> through the three cable providers.
Broadcasters typically aim to include their channels in base packages to maximise their reach among cable TV customers, who mostly subscribe to these packages.
As per the new packages created by these MSOs, Disney Star's entertainment and sports channels would have been part of higher-priced bouquets.
Officials say that the MSOs will come out with revised channel packages soon.
Queries sent to Disney Star and the three multiple system operators or MSOs remained unanswered till the time of filing this report.
\"Disney Star and MSOs have finally found a working arrangement. The broadcaster's channels would continue to be in the base bouquets,\" a senior cable TV executive at one of the MSO companies said.
But a top cable TV official said the price of base bundles will have to be hiked due to the inclusion of Disney Star's channels.
\"The prices of base bouquets will go up by at least Rs 25 to Rs 30,\" the official added.
The MSOs and the broadcasters have been at loggerheads over the latter's decision to hike the price of their channel bouquets under the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India<\/a>'s (TRAI) New Tariff Order (NTO) 3.0. TV distribution<\/a> platforms expect the price of a monthly TV subscription to go up by Rs 25 to Rs 50. The direct-to-home (DTH) operators have decided to implement the price hike in a staggered manner, while the MSOs have been contemplating reducing the number of channels in the base bouquet.
